i have this pt that is in renal failure and elected not to do dialysis. last night i cut her toenails for her. they had grown so long the literally curled almost back into her toes. while cutting them i noticed she had the remnants of polish on her toes. she told me she'd always wore toenail polish until she got this sick. i took some polish to work with me today and tonight i suprised her with a pedicure. i filed her toenails, massaged her feet and legs with lotion and then painted her toenails a pretty christmas color. Pretty toes for christmas! it's going to be her last christmas ever and i wanted to make her smile.

her daughter and son walked in tonight while i was doing the pedicure.

it was the smile on my pt's face and the hugs i got from her children that added an extra bounce to my step this evening.

making a difference in people's lives...even small ones...is what i love about nursing!!!

wOW! You guys really hit home with this one! I am pursuing a nursing career also.... looking at some of the other negative posts on the site, I had almost forgot why I wanted to be one! You guys brought me back...All of positive things that you guys mentioned is what I felt in my heart all the time its just that when you hear too much negativity about nursing it was starting to make me wonder and question the field. But I feel that God is calling me to take care of the sick and I have alway loved serving people. and Help Restoring them if I can.

I agree with you dsigney! There is a lot of negativity on the nursing forums...and I have an opinion as to why. There are a trememdous amount of things in nursing that the nurse gets no choice about. For example:

**no choice (or very, very little choice) in which patients the nurse gets that day (daily "assignment")
**no choice in the timing of patients (it seems as soon as one discharges they're on the phone calling report on the next one)
**even though the acuity of patients can change at any time, there's no adjustment made in the number of patients the nurse has to take (in other words ratios rule, not acuity)
**administration doesn't care about what the nurses have to say
**requests of administration for change fall on deaf ears

These are just a few areas that the nurse has "no choice" in. There are tons more. When "choice" is taken away from you, you are likely to feel like a victim. You may become negative, anxiety ridden and depressed. Talk about stress!

I am an advocate for nurses. I care about my fellow nurses. I think we have a tremendous power source that we haven't tapped into. Personally, I've tapped into this power source in my own nursing career. The results are amazing.

Asking for what you want is very empowering. I blog about this. It's listed under my profile.

God bless!

Although I really hate it at times, mostly due to the frustrations re: management and how under appreciated nurses can be ...

I find nursing to be a very rewarding job. I make a difference in peoples lives no matter how small or big. I meet people I never would have met, let it be patients or interdisciplinary staff who teach me a lot about work and life and make me a better person. Although it is sad when a patient passes away, I always remember them in my heart. Even those who end up going home. How amazing that you can care so much about an absolute stranger! I love that every day is different and I am constantly challenged mentally, physically and emotionally. It can get exhausting, but it is worth it in the end I think.

I'm not a nurse yet, but just the fact that there are so many different opportunities and positions available that one can take on, makes me want to become a nurse more and more everyday. I love the idea that this is not a stagnant career, like most others. It allows you the freedom to branch out and explore other areas in the nursing profession, get a higher degree if one chooses, while in most cases, still being able to work as a full-time nurse. It's amazing to me that with this profession, the possibilities seem to be endless!
What makes me proud about nursing is you're doing something so important and needed, how can you not find joy in it!?

I am an LPN. I haven't been able to practice yet except for clinicals but I love nursing because of the smile and can put on a patients face. And you know what the money isn't so bad either.
