The ability and honor to help people through some of the hardest part of their lives. Getting to know the family and learning positive that can come from a dire situation. I love holding a dying patients hand and cry with the family. and at the same time be able to hold the hand of a new mother giving birth and being an advocate at the begining of life. there is nothing better than learning about life through the compassion of being a nurse

I have been honored to meet and work with and care for the most amazing people, and the most amazing variety of people, who I would never have known otherwise. I have learned so much from coworkers and patients and their families over the years. If I had not worked in health care I would never have had this opportunity.

You can make someone feel their best when they're at their worst. You can give them hope when they already gave up.

    1. When I can infuse appropriate humor into my patient care and education for family members.
    2. When I don't spend the entire commute home having anxiety/crying about what I couldn't do that day.
    3. When I get to spend time actually, REALLY listening to a patient when they share a personal story.
    4. Remaining humble when I help a patient with something very personal. Such as incontinent/ostomy care. And they can tell that I really don't mind.
    5. When I tell my patient that they are the reason for my paycheck and they can call me for any needs...and mean it.
    6. Making that rare buttface doctor swallow their ego when I prove them wrong.
    7. Having a "difficult" family member thank me for my discretion and professionalism upon patient discharge. Meanwhile I have been seething on the inside at how many times I could have or even should have lashed out at their inappropriate behavior.

    THANK YOU FOR THIS THREAD!!!

    I like the fact that:

:heartbeat Nurses help people (no matter what) I've heard of you doing some pretty nasty stuff that most people wouldn't do. It takes guts!

There is sooo much variety! People say: "a nurse is a nurse is a nurse." This I find not true! There are SO many different kinds of nurses!

    SCRUBS! Need I say more?

:typing Nurses (although some put up a tough exterior) are giving and loving people at heart. That is something special that I am finding to be less and less prominent these days.

Thats about all I can think of at the top of my head, but there is much much more to nursing than meets the eye!
