What exactly do fertility nurses do?

I've seen some positions online for IVF nurse/ infertility/fertility nurses. What exactly do you do? I know there is a lot of patient education involved. What about hands on skills?

They assist with reading laboratory results and talking with patients about what dose of medication/hormones they need to take when. ovulation stimulation, hormones to prevent miscarriage and promote ovulation or both (suppository, injection, pills), timing for IUI, timing for IVF, timing for egg retrievals. some do vaginal ultraounds-counting follicles, measuring uterine lining (for fertile timing). Teach injection of fertility medications to patient and/or s.o.

Assist with monitoring during IUI and IVF.

These were just some of my experiences as an over 5 year patient of an infertility clinic.

Truly. I mean, you could google many of the topics here, but it's not as much, and perhaps not as accurate as getting it here. Smart-alleck responses just discourage people from asking questions.

You are welcome. The nurses were my lifeline during those 5 years of hell turned into happiness.

When I was finally pregnant and they were outstanding numbers.....they all (everyone in the office!) got on speaker phone to call and congratulate me!!!

Took pictures with them and my MD after I delivered.

    They are in the scrapbook

aww Otessa I'm so happy for you!! This is exactly why I want to get into this specialty. I have some family members and friends who went through miscarriages and considered IVF but failed. I feel their pain and it saddens me to see them have a great career, great husband....all they wanted is to have their own family but can't no matter how hard they've tried. That is the only thing missing in their life.... I want to help couples achieve their dreams of having a baby kinda silly for me to think this way right?

Not silly at all. Most of the nurses had either Med-Surg or OB/L & D experience so you may want to get a little of that under your belt first.
