What is a Direct Observation Unit?

Right now we are called Transitional/Tele Care Unit but I saw Direct Observation Unit on our unit stuff the other day.

Just wondering if anyone has such a unit and what types of pts they get. Thanks

it wouldnt let me copy and paste the lead in which was "direct observation critical care nurse"

Our DOU is "supposed" to be a mostly tele unit (r/o mi, a-fib, etc)... but it's really just used as another med/surg unit.
