what am I doing wrong?

I'm still looking for a 2nd job, prn or possibly full-time if the offer is right due to losing my prn job and getting hours cut at my main job. I've been looking for at least 6 months and had 2 interviews, but no offer. I'm not too worried about those as one was out of state and I would of had to move if I got it and the other did'nt pay very well. What I'm concerned with is at least 3 times somebody has called to set up an interview and since I did'nt answer the phone (since I work 3rd), I have a heck of a time getting back to them to set up an interview. The latest one called on Wed. and I tried calling back Thurs. afternoon but she had left for the day. The girl answering the phone asked if she could call me Friday, but I said it would be better to call her since I work all night and had an appointment in the morning. So I tried calling just before noon and the person answering said she would call me right back but never did. Should I try again Monday or do you think I should leave it up to her to call me back if they are interested? I also applied to a job at a place in town that I'm very interested in but have'nt heard anything yet (applied in the AM today). Would it be ok to call and check on the app. on Mon. or Tuesday or wait and see if they call back? I don't know what I'm doing wrong. What do you guys think?

In the future, I would leave your phone on at all times. I know it sucks, but I work third shift too--I can't sleep at night anymore!--, but since I am applying to jobs now I turn my ringer on during the day now. With regards to your present situation, when you miss the call the first time, it becomes a gamble between setting the time and being considered a pest. However, they did contact you...so I would give her a few days and then call again.

Id keep trying to call! Leaving the phone on is always an option, but if youre anything like me, you can have a conversation on the phone in the middle of your sleep time and then not remember a word of anything being said later on.

Good Luck.

Call again..as far as applying and not hearing..I'd wait a few days - 3 or 4 then call..any earlier wouldn't really be beneficial as it takes time for the people to review applicants plus tend to their other obligations. Good luck. I truly understand the frustration and anxiety you feel!

I'd leave the phone on too. And if this is you above, leave pencil (pen might decide not to work at a critical moment) and paper right by the phone to jot down a note about anything pertinent related to a call.

Is email an option?

I just wonder because it gets round the whole 'sleeping during the day' problem, and allows good communcation at a time that suits you, not when they call and wake you up and then you cant think straight. :uhoh3:

If you really want the job leave your phone on or see if they can contact you by email? Good luck I hope you find what you are looking for :o

I also work nights and in the process of getting a new job. I always leave my phone on. I am not risking missing an interview because I was sleeping.

Just for an update its been almost a week and I still have'nt heard anything. I've pretty much given up on the one that called before. But as for the local job I'm more interested in, should I still call? If so what should I say? I was thinking just asking if they got my resume, but I don't think that sounds very good. Maybe just say I sent a resume by email about a week ago and just wondering if they made any decisions yet?

Call them BOTH again TODAY.

Since you cannot change the fact that you work night shift AND are on the job hunt, you have to sacrifice unfortunately.

I would get one of those cheap pay-as-you-go phones so that way you can give them that number and keep it on at all times and turn off your main phone. This way, you can be assured it's an important call and worth you waking up and taking it.

Good luck!
