How do you all feel about Wellbutrin XL. I've been prescribed them and they are working for me. I was diagnosed with PTSD and they have been working wonderfully(see domestic violence survivor under my posts). the problem is, my father is in an uproar about them. he thinks they are the enemy and that they will only bring me down. what do you all think?

I think that psychopharmacology is the way to go in many instances.

Wellbutrin didn't work for me - it doesn't help with anxiety and panic attacks. The Lexapro I'm on does.

If it works for you keep taking it.

Wellbutrin has been a wonder drug for me! I had a bad problem with binge eating before I started the Wellbutrin for general anxiety and depression. Since I started the Wellbutrin, I only remember really binging about twice. Now, if I want to stop eating, I tell myself I want to stop and I do! It might not sound like a huge deal to some of you, but I cannot stress how much it has helped me. All psychopharmological drugs work differently in different people however.....im just happy I found the right one for me!!

Is your father a friend of Tom Cruise's? I don't want to make too light of it, especially if you otherwise enjoy a good relationship with him, but his outmoded thinking is not good for your mental health. Depression is a chemical imbalance, and Wellbutrin helps to balance those chemicals. It's as simple (and complex!) as that.

I'm so sorry that your father disagrees with your decision. In the end, you must decide what is best for you. We at All Nurses can't provide medical advice though. If you have medical questions, it is always best to ask your provider who knows your health history details. Thanks for understanding.

You know...

here's the rub...

Many many many people need a little help dealing with situations that tax coping capabilities to the max. That is just what drugs like Wellbutrin are for. They should be used in conjunction with psychotherapy. The problem is the therapy is not always covered by insurance and the drugs usually are, thereby rendering the patient with only half of the treatment available to them. Take whatever therapy is availble to you in conjunction with the medication if you choose to take it. Medication does not always HAVE to be a permanant thing if thats what your dad is afraid of.

YOU get to decide what is best for YOU. YOU have been through the rough time with all of this, YOU get to call your own shots! Isn't that wonderful and empowering?

Wellbutrin XL is a wonderful drug. Just be sure to keep in touch with your doctor as side affects can arise. My mother was on this drug for many years :)
