We Don't Monkey Around In SICU

Nurses General Nursing

That is our unit's NEW motto. Can you believe it?

Our manager (who is over MICU, SICU, Telemetry, and Respiratory), in her infinite wisdom and experience, has decided that we need a bulletin board in each unit's waiting area that has pictures and names of each staff member so that the families will know who is caring for their loved ones.

In general, I don't have a problem with that. However, the manager and one of the clinical coordinators went to our local "Education Station", where they sell all kinds of school supplies and whatnot, and proceeded to buy little animal cutouts of monkeys and fish, and also some hearts, to put our pictures on.

MICU will be on the fish, Telemetry will be on the hearts, and WE (SICU) will have our faces on CUTOUT MONKEYS with the title of the board being "We Don't Monkey Around In SICU!" God only knows what kind of bullsh*t they have thought up for the fish.:chuckle

Now, can you just IMAGINE what these family members are going to be thinking of us when they see our faces on monkey bodies? After they laugh themselves sick, they're going to be highly concerned about the quality of care their loved ones are going to get "in the jungle with the apes."

After protesting loudly, I told the clinical coordinator that I was going to tape up some baboon pictures and write the motto "We Have The REDASS 'cause We're So Understaffed!" and let the families see that. They might as well, it looks like there's elementary school students caring for their post CABGs.

I'm just disgusted.:(

they have no right to use your image against your will
THAT is an excellent point, sharann. If it's not specifically written into your contract, then they can't use your image without your permission. I would think the threat of a legal injunction would be enough to get the hospital to back off immediately. Are you unionized, or can you get the state BON involved?

Exactly...they need written permission to use your photograph. You guys need to stick together and refuse. This is one of the worst schemes I've ever heard of. We don't monkey around, indeed. No bloody kidding... I love the thought of putting management's pictures there. Sheesh!

I'm aghast that anyone thought this was worthwhile. Where the heck was your manager when this brainstorm was thought up?

Whoever mentioned the 'deprofessionalizing' of nurses hit the nail on the head. At a time when we are striving to improve the perception of nurses and nursing as a career, this idea throws us right back into the stone ages.

Perhaps you could put THIS on your BB at work.

Hey SICU, I'm poking fun of the monkey theme in my previous post, but this is definitely a silly management idea and you need to work through usual unit governance to get it changed.

Specializes in SICU.

We've all decided to write a letter stating our objection to the theme of the bulletin board and are refusing to have our faces posted on such ridiculous bullsh*t.

They are requiring us to have some sort of bulletin board, so we've elected to have small photos of ourselves with our first names, and having a patient/family-oriented education theme about CABGs and other surgical type stuff, and have communicated this in the letter. THAT I can live with. :)

If they don't like our idea, well, then I guess I don't know what I'll do next. It's just sad that I have to waste my time standing up for myself and my co-workers professional image. And to my own manager!! That's what irritates me the most. :(

I do LOVE the jacka$$ and hole in the ground idea though... thanks for that one!

I'd wager that this poor manager thought the idea was cute or funny. Maybe someone needs to have a private talk with her/him. I do wonder how your everyday executive, business man, banker or broker, say, would like seeing his pic displayed like that?

Until then I wouldn't hesitate to just take my picture down. Do it when there is no one around, save yourself some grief. Your new idea sounds much more professional and acceptable, insist on it. Good luck.

Hey Mario,

Good idea. You could arrange them according to their valence. That way new people could tell at a glance who was a "stable" element and who was a "volitile" element. On second thought, that could cause the more "volitile" nurses could react negatively to the other elements stuck in the beaker with them.

Keep thinking Buddy, you've got lots of energy and enthusiasm that this profession needs.

Level2trauma - your idea is hilarious!

SICU Queen - sincerest sympathy...

I think maybe OHRU should be the "Cabbage Patch Kids" (very appropriate for CABG) with a big picture of the patch and staff heads, with cabbage for hair of course, popping out... and your NM + Clin. Coord should be pictured inside Big Hams...

The monkey idea is so outrageous, it's nearly unbelievable. We have a fairly "sick" administration, but honestly I have never heard of anything so demeaning or unprofessional. Either your manager and the clinical coordinator are totally in left field or more probably - they're wicked... and this is another very clever way to depower and belittle the staff and empower theirselves - CONTROL!!! Seems that same style of command has surfaced in many different faces again and again in nursing...

I do actually believe there could be some potential danger or risk from publicizing yourself in a monkey's body. There are many, many types of people who enter that waiting room and anyone pictured in such a fashion on the bulletin board, will lose any sense of respect. I would not feel safe...

I am sure that today with all the political and public emphasis on nurses and short-staffing, terrible working conditions, and mass nursing exit - that many nursing advocates/leaders would find this of particular interest... Consider, informing ANA, Johnson + Johnson, other sites for nurse harassment/recruitement/retention ... and please for all our sakes, do not allow it!

I am truly saddened to even learn of something so awful...

Good Luck and Please Keep Us Informed!

Sad but true, cbs3143, many nursing students put the elements of earth as the most distant idea.
