Typical Day as RN?

  1. I'm a first-year RN student and am wondering what to expect as per a typical day as a nurse. I'm hoping to get into ER nursing but understand that may not be the best place to start. However, I'm getting into this so I can work in a hospital as that is where my desires are. What is it like for a new nurse working in - say - oh - whatever. Let's say, ICU? Or any other area.

    Thanks for any info

I have never had a "typical" day :chuckle

Generally though, you clock in, report to unit, get your assignment, receive report on your patients, assessments, meds, charting. Only to repeat assessment, meds and charting as often as required by the unit policy. Along the way prioritizing the problems/issues that pop up.

The post above is pretty accurate. MOUNTAINS Of paperwork....charting etc. And assessments. I work in OB which I realize is NOT ICU, but I love what I do. I would love it more if paperwork did not get in the way of my being with my patients more.
