Types of jobs

I am wondering what types of job options there are in nursing other than traditional bedside nursing. I am not opposed to working on a Med-Surg floor or anything, but I am definitely interested in using the scientific knowledge I learned in nursing school while getting a bachelors degree. I have been thinking maybe research would be a good option?

I am currently employed at a nursing home so I think my view may be jaded, I don't like simply passing medications to 23 people ALL DAY, it is a boring way to spend a day, and frankly with that many patients I just don't feel 100% safe. I am looking for a job where I can do more than pass medications, and use my problem solving and critical thinking skills. Any advice or cool job options would be appreciated. I would probably be well suited for a desk job or something.

Start by looking at job listings.
Many of the public health, research, transplant coordinator, management, nursing education, etc, require at least a BSN.
To be competitive, hands-on nursing experience is required for most of these.
Many nurses desire non-bedside nursing jobs. There are not enough of these jobs to go around, even with a paycut.
Patience and determination goes a long way.

You should look at usajobs.gov. They have jobs on there site all the time for nurses to do research at HRSA, NIH, etc. Also have you thought about the US Public Health Service. Also google them for the web site and then you can find out about what they do. I work for a governement agency and a lot of nurses in the US Public Health Service work here. They manage grants and programs. Do your research and good luck.
