Traveling/relocating to Texas

Greetings All Nurses,

I am this close ( ) to acepting a position in Texas. It is my dream position. They want me to come in the next week for a face to face interview! The Hospital is does not pay for the travel exspenses to the interview, but does give half the sign one bonus after they hire you! My question is this the norm? Also do you know about a town called "Big Springs"? The job sounds like my heaven in L&D, PP, and well baby nursery. They do about 30 deliveries a month. And when the unit is closed due to a lack of clients, I would float to Med/Surg. I really want this job but I am leary about the relocation, only in that it is permanent and not a travel assignment. They are aware that I am a male and said this would be new for them, but think I would be fine as long as I presented myself with the correct attitude! Anyone been in that neck of the woods or has some thoughts please reply.

Big Springs is not so far from where I am. It is a small (read that: small) town in West Texas. It is a pretty town also. Only a couple driving hours from Abilene, Lubbock and Midland/Odessa which have actual city amenities. You can't beat West Texas people for friendliness! We often send nursing students from Texas Tech there for rotations. They usually come back with good reports. I don't have any personal experience to report about it other than driving through it. You'll definitely find it warmer and MUCH drier. A lot of hospitals in the West Texas area are starting to pay part of the sign on up front. My hospital isn't yet but we pay a relocation bonus (up front) on top of a sign on that starts to be paid at the 90 day eval. Of course, like the rest of the country, the nursing shortage is here also but most places in West Texas are pretty good to work for (of course, my hospital is the best! ).
