Nurses General Nursing

1. All work and no play for seven straight days makes ixchel a mean girl. I think I may owe some apologies when I go back to work. :(

2. A young person is capable of being hypoxic to anoxic for so long their brain swells before their heart stops. (Particularly when they've had a lifetime of ignored asthma exacerbation so to get used to chronic hypoxia.)

3. Regarding said person, I have many cuss words for the people who could have done more for her.

4. Pools get slimy fast.

5. This person exists: VITAS - Седьмой элемент / The 7th Element - YouTube

6. I love the pet therapy thread! (If you haven't seen it, go to my profile and see threads I've started. I think it's the one I started before this one.)

7. I'm attempting to go off caffeine. I'm an idiot.

8. I want to be an FBI agent. Mulder and Scully just make it look so damn cool.

9. Apparently, a wonderful perk of working for a hospital is a fast-acting employee health department. It's good to know my potential HIV and Hep status quickly after a needle stick.

10. Press Ganey did not ask questions I hoped they would ask on our survey.

11. I'm not okay with the waxing and waning of adequate staffing, especially when they have yet to actually "officially" change the staffing requirements for my unit to what they "officially changed it to" two years ago. NOT COOL. This is actually what led to number 1.

What have you learned this week?

I love the "This Week I Learned..." posts!

This week I learned that my cat's vet does not know the difference between a nurse who takes care of humans and a vet tech. As nurses, we will medicate, do wound care and bath people...even sick, angry, demented people...we do not have a clue how to take on a psycho cat needing an aggressive flea treatment for the next 14 days...so...after the vet did his magic of shaving a good portion of fluffy, showing how to do the cleansing treatment and ointment application he states, "oh yeah, and he will need to be bathed with this shampoo three times a week".....

How the heck do I bathe a cat?...Filled up the tube with a couple inches of water, gathered the supplies, grabbed kitty.....once he hit the water he scaled the wall, jumped off the facet, slid across the bathroom floor, hissed and growled at me and then tried to tear down the door...I then learned that there are pet grooming locations (right next door to the vet) who would happily bathe the cat...now all I have to do is give the monthly flea tablet, apply the antiseptic cleanser and medicated ointment twice a day for the next two weeks....and work on my own wound care plan since I tried to bathe kitty:unsure:

You always crack me up!

I learned what a COB is!

I learned I truly enjoy the bantering and teasing among my coworkers, and how everyone envies my department because we always have so much fun!

I learned that there is never a bad time for a Long Island Ice Tea!!!

I've learned that sometimes, self care needs to be a priority. I think a lot of us in healthcare tend to forget that… at least, I did.

That we have a bed bug protocol and it involves some nifty looking suits.

I've learned that the general attitude of a message board goes in cycles, but I can't wait until this cycle of nurse self-loathing is over. See the certifications thread, the stand up for yourself thread, and a few others.

I learned that chipmunks think the screen door is always latched and it's safe to tease the cat. Well it wasn't. 12 lb bengal gunslinger went medieval on that chipmunk. Still finding pieces.

Whoa. We have a nest of the little ******* under our deck. They do come up and sniff around the door. The cats go wild. Woe to the one for whom the door does not close in a timely fashion. Zuzu is poised to kill.

I just choked on my water...as a side note watch out for that chipmunk...found out his cousin is probably how my 15 pound fluffy (not his really name) got a bad case of the fleas...never had any problems until he started spending time outside on the 2nd floor porch....I think I looked like that chipmunk after I tried to follow the vets advice and bathe the cat!

I learned that the grant for my son's special ed preschool went through and he gets to go to school full time!

I also got into the earlier lab I wanted to so I'm at school while the kids are at school. I get out at 1530 and it takes me 1 1/2 hours to get home, but I was scheduled to be at school until 1900 so this is amazing! Plus with little butt going to school full time I'll have 2 days alone to study.

We have an appointment on Wednesday to go over his Autism testing.

Getting a cover up on your foot will need to be bigger than your original tattoo. You *must* be well hydrated & eat before, if you don't do those two things you will go into shock. Oh & foot tattoos EFFING hurt, by the way.

I've never wanted to get a tattoo on my foot. The lack of fat cushioning the constant stabbing needles towards my bones scares me. Mind you I have 6 tattoos.
