They Think I'm Working Christmas?? - page 8

Ok so where I work they apparently don't tell the staff what they're working Christmas because they don't want to hear the moaning...(?). Well that has annoyed me already, but I had calmed down... Read More

My brother in law just retired from Safeway. They got paid triple time for holidays (and Sundays!!!!) It went by bidding, which of course went by seniority. You better believe there was no problem filling those shifts.

But of course, keeping the supermarket staffed and open on holidays is so much more vital than doing the same for the hospitals...
Have I ever mentioned that I hate Safeway, I hate the Safeway Club Card, I hate the way their employees all bug me while I shop with robotic questions, I hate the way the clerk announces my name when she's done ringing me up? Also, I hear they suck as employers, even if they do pay triple time on Christmas.

The thing is, the supermarket doesn't have to be open on Christmas. If they open, they make huge profits. The hospital has to be open and doesn't make any more money on Christmas.

The new UFCW contract is different, all you get for holidays is based on the average hours worked of the previous six weeks. My daughter works for Safeway, she will only get straight time plus 2 hours holiday pay. My son works for Albertson's, he'll get at least 6 hour's holiday pay because he worked more hours.

I'd tell them to take me off the schedule Monday or not see me Saturday or Sunday, because I'd quit right then and there, effective immediately.

LOL I like your attitude!! Believe me, I'm quite tempted esp with all the running around Im doing today!!

I can tell you right now what I'm doing. I'll finish up monday am and be done. I already left a voice message with the DON stating that I would not be available that day at all.
I'm curious to see if I was left any message at work tho for me..I go in at 7pm.

I am anxious to know, Jodyangel, what are you going to do?

My NM came to me because he needed someone to work Christmas Day. I am a weekender. I told him I would work it but I wanted Fri-Sun off. I said I would work Wed and Thur instead. He grumbled and tried to argue that he already had too many people working on those days. Most of those people are new hires. I have been there 6 yrs and have done my share of holiday shifts. My response was "well I'm sorry but I guess I can't help you then". Eventually, we came to an agreement and I did get the days I wanted. So, I am working Christmas but I have the 3 days off before and 3 days off after Christmas. Not too bad.

    Keep us posted...

I love how some facilities support their staff.
    Never mind that its Christmas..
How can you expect anyone to pull 2 12 hour shifts in 2 days and then turn around and pull another shift less than 8 hours later.
I work 12 hour shifts 7 days on then 7 days off, but thats my regular schedule that I have gotten used to, planned out with 12 hours in between for sleep. Come on people even pilots aren't allowed to work those crazy hours without so many hours of rest.
Now they don't want to tell you what your schedule is until 3 days prior to a holiday because they don't want to hear the complaining.
    Simple solution
Get the leave requests in 30 days before the requested days off and you won't have to worry about it. Leave request not in on time..no leave given. Gee how simple does that sound, its been done at every other place I have worked at. If these people can't straighten out the complainers by setting a sensible policy that works for everyone (and sticking to it) then mabey they should come in and work that shift or find work elsewhere

My brother in law was able to retire early because they offered him and those like him (long time employees) sweetheart deals to leave. He got a lump sum and draws close to $3K a month. He's still relatively young and very healthy and there's nothing stopping him from going out and getting another job- other than the fact he's enjoying his retirement too much. I only wish it were me!!!

This is horrible! How rude of them! I worked Thanksgiving, as I always do since my daughter's birthday is Christmas and I like to have it off if at all possible. I work tonight, and I worked last night. No problem; it's my weekend and our night weekends are Friday and Saturday. Well, I found out I am scheduled for next Sunday. I didn't even work Sundays! I say "didn't" because I look further into the schedule book and the staffing coordinator has changed my days by adding TWO extra days to my permanent schedule. I was casual/per diem now I'm part time. She didn't even ask me! I work another job! It's SO messed up how people take liberties with your time; like your life isn't important. I'm going to suck it up, because really there is nothing I can do because I love this facility- it just sucks when your employer takes advantage of you. My heart goes out to you. I hope everything works out in your favor. Merry Christmas!

I am really glad that you are sticking to your guns and not going in. They know they are wrong and that they are trying to take advantage. And you are working CE and part of CD which is more than fair. And telling you that Christmas Day doesn't start until 7am is a crock of crap. Here in the civilized world the new day begins at 12am.
