I'm a new grad and am excited and also overwhelmed by all of the different areas I'm interested in.

My number 1 love is maternity nursing, and my first job will be in L&D and I'm really excited.

Besides L&D I'm also interested in NICU, Peds, Psych, school nursing, home care, hospice, maybe OR.....

And I might want to get my FNP and do primary care (probably with a Peds or women's health focus)

And I might want to spend a few weeks doing volunteer nursing abroad at some point.

That's a lot! I don't think I can actually do it all, while raising a family.

How many different paths have people taken in their nursing careers?

Did you end up working in areas you never considered at first, or not liking areas you thought you were interested in?

I definitely can relate to your enthusiasm,I personally like med-surg,specifically I would love to work with patients post op, I'm also interested in GI lab as well as neuro-ortho floor, I also find post anasthesia unit as well as OR very fascinating,definitely could try in ER, loved my psych rotation and enjoyed the happy atmosphere off Labor delivery as well as the mother and baby unit,rehab is ok too,I guess what I like is a busy,learning envinronment with a mixture of different pathologies!!!!

well, if you ask me? i ended up in an area i've never considered before :(

i really dreamed way back in college that after my graduation and getting of my license, i should work in a hospital and be an OR nurse..but unfortunately, i landed being a company nurse..how sad..but aNYWay, the earth is round and who knows the next spin, i would be given a break and be an OR nurse i've dreamed of...don't worry my dear we're still young..let's enjoy the path we have right now, it's good to try different areas of nursing...

When I was in nursing school I wanted to be in an ICU/CCU/SICU....I wanted to handle the sickest of the sick, and the people who were trainwrecks because I worked for 8 years in EMS and all i dealt with were trainwrecks. Right now I work on a Cardio-thoracic Step Down Unit, it was not where I saw myself being ya know what? I LOVE IT, and i wouldnt trade it for anything right now. I'm glad I didnt lock myself in to a single specialty right away because something like a CTICU is sooo polarized, you only deal with a certain patient population and at least for myself I need to have variety or else i get bored. Keep your mind open to different things you never know what you might like
