There is no nursing shortage! This is and was a sales pitch!

I am so very frustrated with trying to find a job. Even the VA hospital in Minneapolis MN has a hiring freeze on now. I have been applying everywhere and I all I receive is an email telling me that they are not hiring new grads at this time.

Yeah there never was....if you were to look up the licenses by each state, whether inactive or otherwise. Many nurses were choosing not to work for either issues with being a nurse, or their spouse provided income and they stayed at home. Market crashes, people lose jobs, a lot of these nurses return to work resulting in a saturated market.

If you're able to move, more rural areas have jobs.

The nursing shortage is a myth. It doesn't exist. Anyhow, the reason you are having a hard time finding a job is because of the economy. It's happening everywhere. Hospitals have hiring freezes as part of budgetary cuts.

According to a July 2002 report by the Health Resources and Services Administration, 30 states were estimated to have shortages of registered nurses (RNs) in the year 2000. The shortage is projected to intensify over the next two decades with 44 states plus the District of Columbia expected to have RN shortages by the year 2020.

But which 44 states?

I think there will be some kind of shortage in a matter of years when the more experienced nurses retire. Hopefully the economy will fix itself before then.

There may not be a shortage, but jobs are available just not in the more desirable areas it seems. Some people can't move, others don't want to move so they'll keep applying to hospitals until they manage to get hired.

There has never been a nursing shortage--just nurses fed up working under poor management and tired of hospitals BS. Look up how many RN's are in any given state and how many are actually working as an RN and you will see a large disparity. Rather than improving working conditions, employers would rather shout, "Nursing Shortage" in order to allow foreign nurses to be imported. The last study I read stated 50% of RN in the USA were foreign born. Foreign nurses generally do not rock the boat, are not assertive and will work under any conditions, which help keep wages lower. Nope, never been a nursing shortage, just a shortage of nurses working!

I've said many times on allnurses, this is exactly the same as what happened back in '93 when I graduated. My advise is, get a job wherever you can and don't turn your nose up at LTC! Ride it out and then when the job market opens up again, make your move into the area that more suits you.

I will keep my ear to the ground about when MPLS lifts its freeze. I do know that the freeze is a soft freeze and that managers still want to hire but they can't right now because they want to be able to hire to cover retirements etc.

I also heard of a home health agency looking for RNs to conduct fu shot clinics...

Currently the nursing market in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area is very tight. There are layoffs happening in the hospitals and the several nursing homes have hiring freeezes. You may try looking on careerbuilder, this is where a majority of the facilities post jobs available in the area.

Look down south where the snowbirds fly. Just a quick hotjobs search of Dallas turned up 52 RN positions and 53 in Atlanta. Unfortunately that doesn't do the people in the North any good if they can't just up and move.

You know what gets me. I am seeing on line article listing nursing as a job that offers security. Just saw one today, it featured a model with a stethescope around her neck. I guess I was supposed to think that model was a nurse.
