In OB urinary retention CAN be a problem, but like Heather I never let it get that far. I become VERY uncomfortable if a lady had not voided by 2-3 hours after vaginal delivery or d/c of a foley catheter. 9 times out 10, they have had so much fluid on board, you KNOW their bladders are going to be full soon. I palpate frequently to ensure nondistension and if in doubt, after a few hours WILL try peppermint/wintergreen or clove oils for aroma therapy (just a whiff does it) and warm water on the perineum to induce voiding. It usually works Last-ditch, I will straight cath to empty a full bladder. One of the worst cases of pp hemorrhage I ever saw involved nothing much more than an over-distended bladder getting in the way of uterine contraction. I can't imagine a lady having more than 2000 cc in her bladder after delivery. I learned the hard way then and there to stay ON TOP OF pp voiding patterns.

After my first child was born( 8lbs,8oz vag delievery, epidural) delievered at 1700, at 2300 still unable to void and I was in agony!!! I kept telling my nurse, she said" Well, if you don't go, I'll have to cath you!!" I was screaming "Cath me!!! Cath me!!" She finally straight cathed me, and got 2100 back!!! At 0100, same story, same nurse, she said"Well, I'll have to leave it in this time if I have to cath you again, and there can't be anything in your bladder." I told her I didn't care, she cathed me and got 1800 back.
where were you when I needed you, Smilingblueyes and OB Heather?

OK - I will not rest until I reclaim the crown!

This also reminds me of a bar in Atlanta that had a drink special called "bladder bust" - you paid so much to get in and drink all you wanted until the first person had to pee. Women were not popular with the men on those nights....

The trust I work for has a new regime for pts admitted with insulin-dependent diabetes and BSLs over 25mmol/L. Lady came in from a residential home having collapsed, found to have BSL 34mmol/L. Started on new regime (4x 1L N/S Q1hr, 2x 0.45% NaCl Q2hr then 1L N/S with 40KCl Q4hr until r/v). Cathed on arrival as she was unresponsive and would have been unfair on her (and us!) to keep changing her pads while they pumped her full of fluid. She passed the most revolting urine for about 2 hours (3400ml) then it cleared and we got another 4000ml over the next 3 hrs. Total of over 8000ml that shift, but she wasn't in retention so doesn't count for the gong of most pee in one go....but I was impressed! Regime did the trick, BTW - 2000% improvement in her condition after 48hrs, and her electrolytes never got out of balance once (12hrly bloods).

OOOOO that sounds fun! As long as I've got a Poise to catch little drips I can hold it for a LONG TIME...only if it's for a good cause of course! I HAD to hold it not long ago because I was stuck in traffic - OUCHY! Talk about bladder spasms when I finally went and went and went and went and went...it hurt!! And kept hurting for a while afterwards...thank God for 800mg motrin!!!!

sorry, but I think that is malpractice. And a whole hellalot of it is going on out there, apparently. I am sorry you suffered like this. NOT good nursing in practice here, clearly. What a shame.

Well, after I gave birth to my second child they removed the foley so I could try to pee. I couldnt go all day long so they replaced the foley and out came 1000 cc's...

after my second child was born VBAC I was told to call for help if I needed to pee (epidural, etc). He was born at 0130 and I was in my room by 0430 (not sure how many bags of L/R I'd had, but It was plenty). At about 0600 I had to GO, so I hit the call light. That "voice" says "can I help you?" I said "Yeah, I need to use the bathroom" she says "I'll get your nurse." 15 minutes goes by...no nurse. So I ring again, again she says she'll tell my nurse this time 10 minutes goes by, no nurse...i hit the button again and yelled "If you dont' get someone here in 2 seconds I'm going by myself.!!!" I heard running feet all the way down the hall...I overflowed the "hat" and then filled it halfway again...can't remember for the life of me what that totals - I hurt so bad by the time she came in I was in tears...I shoulda just wet the bed and made them clean it up...by the way my "nurse" was on a smoke break and the desk clerk helped me to the bathroom.

I was driving from Long Beach, CA to Phoenix after working all day. I was drinking a 44-oz Coke and finished it and there was not a rest area in site. There was too much traffic to pull over and go by the side of the road. So, I straddled the cup and filled it. Thank goodness for bucket seats! I had to stop and dump and then go a bit more. So, I figure that my bladder holds about 1500cc.
