aww thanks Timothy! You are right... info overload sure does swirl in the brain. I'm so excited to be graduating in a few weeks and will be able to focus in one area. I will be going to CCU and I can't wait to take my critical care classes and work one on one with my preceptor! It's scary but exciting..I still have SO much to learn but with one area to focus on and with actually USING the info I know it will all come together with some actual experience

i think that anaphylactic shock is probably seen more by emts and er personal d/t accidental ingestion, bee sting, etc that are met by people in their day to day lives
other conditions are apt to be a body's response to the worsening of a disease process or an error in treatment

Nope. Anaphylactic shock is actually not as common as you would think. People who are deathly allergic to something usually know it and have epi pens and other meds, so that by the time we see them they are improving. And even then the numbers of people who react to things that badly are not that high because these people know to avoid the problem substance. The most common shock ER and pre-hospital personnel see is hypovolemic....,,volume depletion in the elderly due to underlying illnesses, and in trauma victims due to hemorrhage.

Well I have seen a couple of hypovolumic shock in my career really but tons of septic shock. i don't work emerg and suspect tons of people are not able to be stabilized or die in the feild with this form of shock. The amount of sepsis and septic shock in my mostly wound care/home care is much larger. But when I said that our personal experiences would shape what answer we gave - it really does depend on which specialty we work in. That said- I do believe that hypovolumic is the most common- even though I would rarely see.

In my ICU world, the shock order would be hypovolemic, then septic, then cardiogenic.

On a personal note, the most common type of shock in my New Orleans household is directly related to recent energy bills!! We have taken to calling it "getting electrocuted" so maybe it's electric shock!! LOL...
