Subpoenaed To Court?

  1. Just Wondering...
Have you ever been subpoenaed to appear in court? I'm not asking for details of the case, of course. Just want to know what it was like, how long it lasted, what do the attorneys ask?
I keep a small notebook to jot down anything important. What do you do to "CYA"?

If I can add another question ....

    - Do you get paid when you are subpoenaed?

    - Just wondering.

Yes, I have. Just make all your answers either "Yes", "No" or "I don't recall".

I have been both subpoenaed and contacted by attorneys concerning coming to court. Alot of what happens depends on if it is a criminal case or a civil case. In a criminal case, you can be called as a witness to recall events you witnessed. If you are not being asked to use your nursing knowledge, you will receive a small witness fee. Most times you will be given a time period were you must be reachable by phone and arrive to the court house within a few hours. If you are ever asked to testify using your professional knowledge, you can and should charge a professional witness fee. You can use this fee to keep yourself out of court. There is no law governing how much you can charge for this fee. Whenever I am contacted by an attorney, I start by explaining to them that I charge a $500.00 an hour professional witness fee and that time begins Now and covers anytime I discuss the case with them or in court. Every attorney has said, " I will contact you again if I need you" and I have never heard from them again. MD's have been receiving these witness fees for years and since nurses are liscenced professionals, we are eligble to do the same.
