How about those family members or friends who

come to visit? Any interesting experiences

with that?

Heres a fummy one...

I worked as a nursing assistant through my first year of nursing school on an ortho/neuro unit. Our unit had unlimited visiting hours, and family could spend the night if they chose (we had settees for them, etc.) . This patients husband would spend the night every night with her. Her hubby treated the hospital just like home (I assume). At night we would go in and he would be sitting or lying on the settee in his boxers...nothing else. Unfortunately we saw WAY more of this man than any of us wanted to see! We had to have our unit mgr talk to him about wearing something more than his undies while he was in the room. I don't get how he thought it was ok to dress like he was at home...or that his wife thought this was ok. Wierd!

Shoot, if it keeps a confused pt from yanking out their lines or getting out of bed without help, I don't care if they sit in there naked as the day they were born!

I personally would wear very modest pj's were I spending the night with my dh in the hospital. But it doesn't bother me if a patient's husband (I work postpartum) is in his boxers. Sometimes when we have an antepartum pt, they are there for months and that room literally does become their home, so I try my best to accomodate them and their spouse as far as things like that go.

Once I had a young (30-ish) female pt (med-surg) who'd spent a few days in ICU for a perfed bowel and was on our floor s/p colectomy. She also happened to be on her period. She was at the point where she could be up & about and could change her own pads etc. But she allowed her dad to help clean her up down there numerous times. I know they were very close and that's great. But there comes a point where my dad is NOT going to be seeing my privates nor hearing about my periods. Looking back, maybe there was more to that story than we knew about.

Maybe but when we get the Irish Travlers or Gypsys in our hospital, we will remove everything out of their sight, or they take what isn't nailed down:uhoh21:

And the husband's name?

I once walked on on a hospital patient I was caring for and his partner. The patient was very end stage HIV. Too weak to move. When I opened the door the partner was mounting him on the bed. The patient's face was distorted in agony. Broke my heart. This man was days from death and the partner wanted sex from him. I lost my cool and pulled the man off of him and threw him out of the hospital and told him not to come back. My patient just whispered " thank you". He died 2 days later.

That is disgusting and heartless. The partner, I mean, if you can call him a partner. Sounds more like a rapist.

I remember something that always struck me with certain people. I worked 2 summers cleaning hotel rooms and it was the same there and in the hospitals... it was as though I became a piece of the furniture and no mind had to paid to my presence. I saw all manner of behavior that is meant to be kept private.

I had a pt that was around 12 hours post delivery walk her visitors to the nursery to see the baby wearing only a short (to the belly button) shirt, and the net panties with huge pad. And she did not take kindly to the suggestion that she return to her room for a robe. Someone finally brought her a gown to put on!

I once had a delivery where the moms husband, and the babies dad (who was NOT the husband) both attended the delivery, they were very well behaved, and were both great for mom during and after the delivery!

I'm sure I'll think of more, brains not working great right now!

We have liberalized our visiting policy inthe

ICU's. Maybe too much. We had this comatose lady on a vent with a realllly weird family. One day

while passing the room, the charge nurse found

the spouse lying on top of the patient, making

out with her and tonguing her, even around her

endotracheal tube (and she'd been there for

about 3 weeks, so she had become nice and

crusty and yeasty).

Meanwhile, on the floor beside the bed, was their adult mutant son, doing pushups as fast as he could!

WHAT???? :eek::smackingf:no::lol_hitti:bugeyes:
