I am an RN been one for 22 years. I work part time on a general surgical floor. I had a sse till clear order my patient would vomit the go lytely before it did its thing. My patient, a lady, commented that she'd never had an enema before and I explained what it was what we do and so on. She then asked what would she feel? Feel? I then realized that I had no clue as I never had one.
My question it...simply...what does an enema feel like?
Thanks. ED, RN BSN

You know, I was curious about how the NP swabs for flu/RSV felt.....so I swabbed myself. Just sayin'...

Its been 2 decades since having one so my memory maybe a bit off.. As far as the insertion..not painful or uncomfortable but "weird" because of where it was going.. As far as squeezing the fluid in, I felt mild pressure but that was it. It was really quick and worked really quick also.. This was for childbirth so not sure how fast they work with the typical enema bottle prepackaged from pharm, mine was a large bag with solution added at the bedside..

I had to have an enema after my C-section about 15 years ago - to get things moving again. It didn't hurt - just pressure. And after it did its trick, almost instant relief from the pain that had building up in my abdomen.

Well......I never thought of giving one to myself, I do have one problem, short arms and arthritis keeps from reaching my tail. Perhaps a coworker...I can think of a CNA who would love to.....embarrassing.
Thanks for your response

Thsnk you to those who responded. I can tell my patient about what an NG tube feels like or a catheter as we did those to each other in n ursing school. But, when I was asked about the enema, I said "no clue"
Now, if someone could say what it is like to be tickled...something else I never experienced....seriously. My parents were "hands off" no "Piggy" games or nothing. ED

Um, do you mean IV catheter or do you mean urinary catheter? I think I would have run away screaming if my school tried to let us do Foleys on each other.
Sorry for being slightly off topic, but I was just disturbed.

Straight urinary catheter. I had a great partner...god bless her. I was the only guy in the class and she let me practice on her....and, yes I missed the first time... damn clitoris. ED

I don't believe that, there's no way a school would allow that to go on. It would be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I don't either. That's just insane.

Do not scare the nursing students.
I would be safe to say that cath-ing each other just doesn't happen.
And I have been at this gig for a long time.
OP I am not sure what you are fishing for, but highly inappropriate, in my opinion.
