Staff development in LTC

I would have posted on the nurse educator site, but it doesn't seem to get LTC posts that much...

I'm considering taking a job as coordinator for 2 small nursing homes. Along with the mandatory monthly inservices and new hires, What are some other things that you are doing?? This would be a 20 hr week between the two (combined about a 100 residents and maybe 100 staff) and I would be able to have very flexible hrs and be able to do prep work at home.

What are some good resources for the staff development coordinator in LTC settings?

One more question...pay. I will check salary.com, but was wondering what the average is? Is it comparable to a staff nurse? Should it be?

Thanks for any info or insight...This is my dream job, I love to teach..but might not be able to swing the hrs with kids at home..

Help!! Anyone with some info? I need to make a decision on this job soon :uhoh21:

Giving LTC staff updated information on the latest research in geriatrics ie: Altzheimers research, HRT r/t bone loss, dietary issues that arise with the elderly, stroke rehab research, .... the list could go on and on! New therapy options and treatments for wound care etc..... If they have the newest and best information -- they have tools to help give the highest quality of care!!

Salary?! While the folks around here seem to think that I should consider the thrill of knowing I have imparted vast stores of knowledge to others as an adequate reward for my work -- I tend to disagree. (Can't feed the kids with warm fuzzies!) I have my MSN and am making a similar wage as some of our staff RNs do.

I have never worked as a staff development coord., but have worked in LTC for quite a while. Some of the things that I've seen SDC's responsible for were keeping track of everyones education hours (CNA's require so many per year, more than nurses) making sure everyone attends the required mandatory inservices, keeping track of new hire and annual PPD's, new staff orientation, and usually they are a part of a management group, ie: QI reports.

As for resources, I'd do an internet search to get the most up to date info.

Pay....you should make more than a staff nurse, as it's considered a managment position, although how much more depends on the facility and exactly all that you are responsible for.

Hope this helped a little!

Thanks Jkeee...Im in Pa too. As far as education hrs, I didn't know PA had regs for continuing ed for CNAs...can you point me a direction to find this info?

what about annual OSHA requirements? The govening bodies who accredit your facility (Health Dept./Fed Govt) all should have guidelines they expect the facility to abide by and you should be teaching those. Someone needs to be doing quality control. If it is not you, find that person and learn what are the deficits that need to be addressed (falls, med errors, documentation problems, etc.). You can set goals from that data and share monthly with the staff so they can see progress. Chart audits will tell you a LOT. I would start with what is required then move to what is expected then to what is nice to have. Don't forget to involve the staff in brainstorming.

Lets try this again...please forgive me this is the first time I have used this posting.

I work in staff development in Pennsylvania. I know you have to offer the nursing assistants 12 hours of continuing education hours. I usually accomplish this by doing a 1/2 hour inservice monthly on a issue that I am dealing with ( I am also the Quality Improvement Coordinator). I also post an article for the girls to read an a quiz which they return to me. I also count this for 1/2 hour. I do this for the Licensed Staff also. Pennslyvania Regulations for Long term Care (tag 201.20) will help you with your yearly inservice requirements...so will the federal regulations (tag 483.75). If you don't have access to these let me know and I will give you the abbreviated list. Yes you do have to include an OSHA inservice on Bloodborne Pathogens. I just include it in my all day annual inservice. Don't forget something on cognitive impairement and a dental inservice also. You might want to look at your facilities own Operational Policy and Procedure Manual....I know there is things my facility require yearly that aren't by the state.

There is alot of job flexibility with this. If I have to go home early because of my children...I just take something home with me and prep it from there once they are in bed. As far as salary goes I make at the higher end of the staff nurses, but I have been here far less years then most of them.

Any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

I was staffing coordinator at a LTC and was required to do all scheduling for CNA's and Nursing staff! It literally took almost all my time!.Don't get caught up in that if you can help it.:uhoh3:
