I am hypertensive patient with getting treatment for 5-6 years now. I used to listen a music from India it is really really soft relaxing type music. Believe or not (most of you will not believe it as much as you believe pills) I feel my blood pressure level going down with same treatment dose of same drug.

Problem is not that...I had to admit to hospital to get treatment for other illness for 6 days recently. When I was hospital I used to listen that music. One nurse was query about the music and I just try to explain her. She starts with jokes and it seems she did not know anything about music therapy. Then I try to explain some thing about cardiovascular physiology and how mind affect to Blood pressure. It seems useless. It is a shame to me being a retired nurse. Tell me what is you impression on music therapy.

I feel people not believe music therapy much. Of course it is not like pills. I found some web site about hypertension and music therapy. If you believe me at least read about it.

The college where I'll be attending my nursing classes (if I get in! eek!) just recently began a music therapy degree. Sounds interesting, I'm sure there is some benefit there, although I've never researched it much myself. :)

I think it's great that you've been able to utilize music therapy to treat your high blood pressure. I have several friends who are music therapists and I really believe that it can do wonders.

WE have a music therapy department at our hospital. Patients are allowed to check out cd players and cds during the course of their stay. One of the chaplains is in charge of it, but it is not all traditional church music, there all sorts of things in it, for people who just want to hear music, to different sorts of soothing things for spiritual/physical healing.

They say music soothes the savage beast and I believe every word. I work on a geri- psych unit and the residents can become quite rambuncious at times, and even more so at the full moon.

We've used music as a way to soothe their temperments and it works every time. Alittle soft, string music goes along way! ;)

Whatever relaxes you can lower your blood pressure. That is hard to argue about.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Trauma, Ortho, Neuro, Cardiac.

Music is my life, my therapy. It lifts me up when I need a boost and it relaxes me when I slow down.

But honestly, we didn't learn that in nursing school. Too "alternative". LOL

My dentist gives you a set of earphones and choice of music to listen to while he works. Makes time pass and helps me relax.

it is awesome that you were tapping into the what Dr Herbert Benson of Harvard University (who did great study trials on HTN in the '60's) calls "The Relaxation Response"....he even wrote several books still in publication with the same title. She was ignorant.....very sad, but true. I am soooooo glad you do this, I attended recently a CE on Music Therapy & my grandma had it when she was in Rehab after her CVA!

I highly recommend it!!!! :kiss

Have you ever tried listening to the (genuine) Gregorian Chants?

Absolutely heavenly!

I believe in Music Therapy for any occasion whether in a hospital, doctor's office while waiting to see the doc, the dentist office during treatments, and so forth. It works for me! :)

I was just a strumming on my guitar before I entered this BB. Makes me much calmer.

I am very impressed with you. As a retired nurse you are still attempting to educate others. Keep up the good work.
