Is it possible to study for the certification (med/surg) with just some certification books? I was going to take a class offered by my facility that starts next January, but my boss just about had a heart attack when I gave him a years notice I wanted to take every Thursday off so I could take this class. I was hoping it would help me narrow down on what I really needed to know.

So...if I go the self study route, any ideas? The cert book that I bought is roughly 4 inches thick.

YES of course you can...I have NEVER taken any course to pass the very difficult CRNI test and I have taken that every 3 yrs since 1990. You must have get the outline and then have or purchase the recommended resources. You do not need to purchase them all..just select a few. You must also have a study plan and be motivated to self study. You actually may get more done on your own b/c you could actually be studying instead of wasting time driving to class.

I agree with iluvivt; you definitely must have discipline when it comes to a study schedule. Mnemonics and flashcards are your friend...good luck.

I have always been self driven. That's not the problem, thankfully. How do I get an out line? I did sign up for material at http://www.pearlsreview.com at the advice of our educator for ceu.

They do offer a med/surg outline from cardiac to ethics.

You guys give me hope I can do this, I actually prefer to do this on my own, but I thought I would need help narrowing it all down.

Cert books are fine, however I'm shocked that with ONE years notice your boss almost had a heart attack.......

I got materials from ed4nurses to study for M/S certification. Really great stuff, felt well prepared for the exam and really learned a lot that made me a much better nurse.

I am a charge with other duties and I guess it's a good thing, but he doesn't like me gone. It will mean he will have to replace me one day a week for 16 weeks. If rather self study anyway. With rising gas prices the less driving the better.
