Seems so incredibly short sighted... but then again, I'm preaching to the choir here

You would think having competent medical professionals would be some kind of priority. Would love to keep an eye on this to see if they fill it

I made more than that as a brand new LPN!! And I live in Tennessee which is one of the lower paying states for nurses.

Of course they'll fill the position.

There are a lot of unemployed RN's (including but not limited to new grads) and they know it.

They can find a hungry, young (read that: " looks pretty in a company wetsuit" ) Appliance Nurse-- Appliance Nurse being a person of the dual, secondary income variety, who only needs a few extra dollars here and there to buy a new toaster or a pair of shoes. Those folks used to work at Mini Marts, but now they need a college degree.

Sigh.

I made more than that as a new grad RN 22 years ago in one of the lowest paid states in the nation.

Unreal! Good for you Esme for calling them out!

The nurse will assist the Paramedic! Really, so now we take orders from them, we are no longer handmaidens to the doctors but to paramedics as well!!!

How is it against labor laws? Also, so you'll be assisting a paramedic. That kinda doesn't make sense.
How does it go against labor laws? Hiring by age. I mentioned in the conversation how long I had been a nurse and I felt that wage is insulting....the HR recruiter stated their target audience was the younger nurse not experience.

They can't discriminate for age.

I couldn't get any straight answers from her about medical control and who makes nursing policy as it can't be a paramedic she got very uncomfortable...and couldn't answer me.

I called them and it is real. "This is a low key environment and a privilege to work for Bush Gardens Tampa. This is a seasonal position that we prefer to have experience but all applicants but that is not at all necessary. We have a full time paramedic staff that the nurse will assist" When I pointed out that occupational health nurses are credentialed she replied that the seasonal nurse will only be doing data entry and following procedure. I told her I was surprised that the education for a licensed position was a high school diploma and NOT graduation from and accredited nursing program...she was confused but mentioned that there is a surplus of nurses looking for work. When I mentioned that was pitiful pay for a RN with any experience...she said "We are looking for young motivated individuals that are looking for a fun seasonal environment" I mentioned that was against the EEOC and Federal labor laws....I got crickets.

They want a warm desperate body

WOW. Then what they are seeking should not be called a nurse. And taking direction/assisting a paramedic--now, paramedics are awesome, however, a licensed nurse is taking a HUGE liability when the unlicensed person is calling the shots.

Data entry is not the sole purpose of the nurse--I am curious as to if "legally" they need a licensed nurse on board--but a high school diploma and young, energetic--then "nurses who need jobs...." Even if I were deperate, not sure I would want to drink this kool-aid!!

LOL Esme!!! Good for you! Let 'em have it! $14.75 for an RN with emergency/triage? No, thanks. Dream on.

...aaaaaand I second, third, fourth the sentiments about the documentary "Blackfish." It really moved me the way one of the interviewees said in native american culture the orca is sacred and holds spiritual significance for them... it just makes the whole history so sad for that poor whale. But, I digress.

Well, the proof will be in the hiring... either they will meet their requirements at the $14.75 or they won't... I'm guessing that they will.

I think I've seen that plenty of RNs in Florida are pulling down $18-$22/hr for acute care and LTC positions so this isn't perhaps so absurd for a (probably) very low stress position.

I wouldn't take it under my present circumstances but I can envision circumstances where I might... say, being unable to find other meaningful work. It would beat being a greeter at Wally World or flipping burgers for minimum wage.

As the elite take more and more of the economic pie for themselves, everybody else gets squeezed... including nurses.

Note that I'm not defending this, simply pointing out the society that we're choosing to create for ourselves.

You think it's bad now, wait about 20 years, when we've got a couple decades worth of unrestricted and largely anonymous money going directly into political campaigns...

So I just took a quick gander through TheCommuter's salary survey thread...

A 2-year LPN in a Florida SNF reports getting paid $17.00/hr (+15% greater)

A 12-year LPN from Tennessee reports getting paid $16.50/hr (+12%)

A 1-yr med-surg RN from Tennessee reports $18.10/hr (+23%)

An 11-yr SNF RN in Alabama: $18.50

A 2-yr RN in Indiana: $19.00

A 2-yr clinic RN in Iowa: $17.21

My point being that, while $14.75 is absurdly low, it's not all that far off what a lot of other nurses report being paid...

Depending on the details on my personal finances, I might choose a $15/hr gig at Sea World over a $17/hr gig at a SNF.
