The right place for me

I am having a major dilemma. I am an LPN with 1 year experience, am a newlywed, and am SICK and TIRED of snow!

I have lived in the frozen north my whole life (as has my husband), and we are looking to relocate (he is a CNA) somewhere warmer. I lived in Tulsa, OK for a brief period a few years ago when I was in school, and I LOVED it. But I was only there in the winter. Sounds like an easy decision, right? Find some nice, subtropic area, and sink your feet in the sand. Well, here's the real clincher. I am petrified of bugs. Spiders especially. And, I'm REALLY not fond of cockroaches. Is there anywhere in the world that's lovely and warm, but isn't swarming with creepycrawlies?

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Blessings,

My barber knows a customer (who happens to be a nurse) who works in Arizona during the Winter and up here in Buffalo during the summer.

Best of both worlds :)

Not true. I have seen the biggest cockroaches ever in Phoenix. There are also spiders as big as your palm. Snakes (poisonous ones), and scorpions.

Realistically, there is no place that is bug free.

central coast, ca. our bugs aren't too big. i don't like creepie-crawlies either.

I just got back from Tracy California, which is below Stockton (an hour from Sacramento). Now I am a true NW gal, too hot makes me melt...but the temps there were fine even in the 90's for me! It is a newer area that is expanding quickly. Has a hosptial that is going to expand soon, and several other types of facilities!

The folks there were soooooooo nice! I mean everyone! It is dry and warm, yet does have winters where temps drop into the 40's for a few weeks then back to sunny! Tropical plants flourish there..in fact, I am so envious because I am planning my gardens and not one of my moms lovely plants will survive in the wet cold of Oregon! Oh it was gorgeous!!!!

So there is warm temps, friendly, work for CNA's and RN's (and more coming!), an hours drive from Sacramento and a little more for San Fransisco, all the stores and resturaunts you ever needed, nice home communities, and sun sun sun! And the only bugs I saw was one small snail, lovely brightly colored dragonflys, and a few flys (and all this was near my moms pond).

I think it is certainly worth the look!

What part of AZ are you speaking of? I was in Tucson and they have tarantulas (which by the way I am arachnaphobic) and don't drive to Ft. Huachuca (the army post) during the rainy season they burrow in the ground and the water brings them out and there are literally thousands on the roads and all over the base. The road is covered with them. I almost had an accident I don't know how I survived the trip down there. I was a mess crying, driving and swerving. Thank goodness I am not in AZ anymore.

hire and exterminator, you'll not have creepy-crawlers if you just hire someone to come in a spray a couple times a year, i have lived all over the western us and never-ever lived some where that i didn't have to deal with some sort of critter during some time of the year. are you saying there are none where you are? or just less, and less frequently do to the freeze?

We have bugs if you go deep in the woods. Then you get the ticks and spiders and icky pests. However, our only problem with bugs is mosquittos by the water, and spiders hanging in the doorway outside the house when it's warm and moist out.

I just want some place I can be happy. I hate the idea of checking my covers to make sure there is nothing that sneaked into my bed at night... I hate the idea of not being able to go outside the house at night because you never know if you are going to step on a spider/snake/cockroach/any other creepy that was just waiting for me to come along... but more than all of that, I'm sick of subzero temps, 10-12 feet of snow, and 6 months of winter.

I think I have my standards set a little high, but I really just want the hubby and I to be happy.

lol...no i don't think you have set your standards too high if it weren't for happiness especially w/the one you love then what else?

i think i understand a little bit where you are coming from i have an aversion to; too hot, too cold, too much humidity, not enough humidity, high state taxes, a city too big, or too small, too far from family, or too close to family...it really does make utopia seem like an impossible dream.

where are some of the places you have lived besides tulsa?

Well, I'm 22. I lived in Tulsa, and another town in the upper peninsula of Michigan. My extended family is all from either Detroit or Flint, MI. Both cities I believe have enormous crime rate, and I am truly a very naive soul. That's another thing.... I don't want to feel like I'm in danger. Oh yeah, did I mention that the area I live in has been in a recession for the past 30 years? So for me, I make enormous money for the area and my age. I don't want to be snapped back into reality too hard. :) To know that I'm a nurse and could not afford to eat in NYC let alone LIVE scares the crap out of me.

Why can't life just be easy?

Hi! I've lived in northern New Mexico for six years, and I've only seen a handful of creepy crawlies. That doesn't mean there aren't any, it just means I've been able to avoid them :lol2: That whole spider thing about the Tucson area and those huge spiders on the road is just ICKY! I think that if you take reasonable care to keep a clean house, and if your house is not directly on the ground with just a pad for a foundation that maybe you see fewer yuckies. I don't have to check my sheets nightly for extra bedmates. The weather is pretty mild here in the winter with a little bit of snow, but by mid-April it feels like summer most days until about late September. I am still a little rattled by the bug idea since there are some UGLY ones here, but most of the time I am happily in denial!
