Registered Nurse Salary Purchasing Power Across States

  1. 21

When searching for a job, one needs to be careful to take into consideration more than just the published salary as that does not tell the whole story. Here are some tools that will help you to make wise decisions when comparing job opportunities.

Registered Nurse Salary Purchasing Power Across States

Whether you are a new grad looking for your first nursing job or an experienced nurse thinking about relocating in search of higher wages, there is much to take into consideration. Salary alone does not tell the entire story, and decisions to relocate for a job should not be based solely on salary numbers. Even if the salary for a potential job is higher, the purchasing power will decrease if the cost of living is also higher. When actual salaries are adjusted for regional prices, this will give the job-seeker a more accurate representation of purchasing power for realistic comparisons between locations.

Below is a list of average Registered Nurse salaries per state based on data from the 2017 allnurses Salary Survey. We have also provided price-adjusted salary information, which incorporates the cost of goods and services in an area to produce figures that more accurately represent the real value of your earnings for cross-area comparisons.

In our calculations, we used the Regional Price Parities (RPPs) from the Bureau of Economic Analysis as well as a Federal Income Tax Calculator to estimate total tax burden including income tax, sales tax, fuel tax, and property tax, based on Single IRS Filing Status.

The location for each state is based on the state capitol. To customize your comparison, you may use this same calculator with your specific cities of interest.

"The RPPs are calculated using price quotes for a wide array of items from the CPI, which are aggregated into broader expenditure categories (such as food, transportation or education). Data on rents are obtained separately from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS).

The expenditure weights for each category are constructed using CPI expenditure weights, BEA's Personal Consumption Expenditures, and ACS rents expenditures."

The location quotient for each state has been added to the information. Location Quotients (LQs) are ratios that allow an area's distribution of employment by industry (nursing) to be compared to a reference, in this case, the U.S. If an LQ is equal to 1, then that location has the same share of employment than the average U.S. If the LQ is greater than 1, it indicates there is a greater share of (nursing) employment that the reference area (U.S. average).

This really puts it in perspective! You have to look at more than the hourly wage.

Now if we could add job saturation statistics to this, it would be perfect!

And even after that including purchasing power, California's adjusted wage is still higher than Florida's. Also, I call BS on that average wage for Florida.

Thanks for adding the number of active RN's. That helps a lot!

Just wanted to say that I find the artwork accompanying each state's stats refreshing.

Nice! Now can we see it as an interactive searchable Excell spreadsheet?

This was well done. Thank you . This also tells me that we are getting taxes too much and RNs could use a raise in most places. Also other than Oregon or maybe Washington state I should just stay put here in California...

My gross income is less than the "income after taxes" for my state.

This was so helpful and amazing! I've been trying to research all of this for my home state but having it all in one place is awesome!

Well without going through the data itself a search of RN & florida on indeed.com gives estimate salary ranges for jobs there as being:
    $35,000+ (16397)
    $50,000+ (12864)
    $55,000+ (11130)
    $60,000+ (8610)
    $70,000+ (3920)

so who knows, doesn't account for shift differentials, weekend pay, and so on.
