First off I am not a nurse YET either. I am still finishing my prereqs and hope to start the nursing program in the Fall of 2010. I have no experience as an RN but have worked in the business world for almost 20 years (nursing will be a second career for me) and there are just as many cons in any working environment.

I read post on here all of the time and I get scared to death sometimes - but never because I am afraid of being a nurse and the hard work that it takes. I am scared because I don't know what else I would do if I didn't make it through nursing school. There is NOTHING I mean absolutely nothing else I could see myself doing. I dream for the day that I am in the hospital doing what I know I was put here to do.

I have thought about being a nurse my entire life. When I was 19 or 20 I worked as a nurse assistant in the hospital mostly in the recovery room and I absolutely loved it. At that time I thought about going to nursing school but had been told by some senior nurses that they wouldn't go into nursing with the way things are, this was in 1989 or 1990. I took their advice and went to a technical school and received a secretarial certificate. I was lucky to land a job in a good field and worked my way up and still continue to work in the field today.

Several years ago my boyfriend was severly burned and as a result of that was in the Burn Unit for 10 weeks eventually passing away. I was at the hospital every day and I will never forget the nurses that took care of him and I knew then that is what "I" wanted to do. I have always looked up and had so much respect for nurses I cannot really express it.

I worked briely as PCA recently and I LOVED it but I just couldn't make it financially so had to return to my previous field of work but I will NOT give up. I am a 39 year old divorced mother of 2 and I work full time so it was hard to take that first step in returning to school but I did. I started college with 3 transfer credits in May 2008 and at the end of this semester I will have 50.

I am sorry for my soap box, and this probably doesn't make sense but I just want the nurses out there to know how very special you are, I envy you and I want to be just like you. I don't think nursing is for everyone, but is IS for me!!!!!!

Good for you!! I'm a mommy too (9 mo. old) and nursing will also be my 2nd career. I have 3 more semesters of pre-reqs (part-time each), then I am hoping to start the summer of 2011 and graduate 2012. I'm even excited to be doing my pre-reqs, I am a total nerd!! :-) But I just LOVE science/Biology/body/ medicine, etc... I find it so interesting. Also, in previous jobs i've had, with my current field of work, I have learned that a "desk job" is not for me. I just can't do it. I am at my best when I am on my feet, using my brain. Throw a little urgency in the mix and I am really on top of it. I can't wait to be a nurse! :-)

nohika,
I would recommend shadowing some nurses in several differenct departments if you can and be certain to include med/surg. Talk to the nurses there, ask questions....

It's not all peaches and cream, yet it's not h$ll everyday either. Make your OWN pros and cons. These will be YOUR reasons you will rely on when you begin to wonder why you ever began this in the first place. You need to know why you want to do it, not why we wanted to do this. Most important....do your research before investing the time, money, and sacrifice!!

Whatever you decide, good luck to you!

I'm definitely going to try to shadow as much as I can...I'm busy this whole weekend, so going around and asking /right now/ is out. I hope to get around to it next week, since I only have one exam instead of the three this week.

@Diane - for personal reasons, it's just easier for my family (my mom + sibs) for me to not work beyond what I make from babysitting.

Now it is too late for me. I have invested a lot of effort and money into this. You will hate it and it will burn you out even before you actually START working.
Stop it now.
Hey there. Your response was very striking to me. May I ask you what kind of experiences you had that have made you feel so disenchanted with the field?

Dear nohika,

Many of the pros have already been mentioned. Another potential pro is that as an RN, you'll be out in the workforce making a living sooner than if you go directly through a PA/NP/another advanced practitioner ed program. Then, once you are working as an RN, you can gain experience while making the $ and/or taking advantage of workplace ed benefits to go back to school for a more advanced degree in a healthcare field...or an entirely different area.

A big con of nursing, to me, is the risk of physical injury. You would most likely start out as a staff nurse, a role that requires pulling and repositioning pts., many of whom don't have the strength to help you move them. Quite a few of these very sick pts. will be very heavy. There are so many nurses, nursing assistants etc. out there who have injured their backs, arms, etc. As an advanced practitioner, you would be spared much of the risk of physical injury along these lines. This is the main reason I don't see myself as a full-time floor nurse for much longer.

Be sure to shadow at least a couple of different nurses in different hospitals. Make the effort to make these experiences happen. Good luck!
