Problem with PEG?

by ambil

Hello all, I work in home care and have a quick question. A patient of mine has had a PEG for approximately one year now, the whole time without any problems. The last few weeks I've noticed that when I do a dressing change that it's not moving like it used to. Has anyone ever heard that they can imbede into the stomach wall after such a long time?
Thanks,

Default Re: Problem with PEG?
I have definitely heard of it, and have seen it personally. The tissue begins to surround the tube and attempts to close off the skin. This is the reason PEG tubes are only inserted via a surgeon and are pulled by a surgeon as well. The body doesn't like having any surgical openings, and therefore, attempts to close the skin off to prevent infection. It is important to keep the tube in, unless the MD decides otherwise, to prevent the skin from resealing around on itself. As long as the tube is in place, it will not.
