How do you get the Prevacid granules to go down the G.Tube without clogging the damn thing up?

Thank you.

but something that works for me when I am crushing pills and putting them down a g-tube is: 1.) crush the pills, 2.) dilute in water for 15-30 min. 3.) stir and pour into another cup that I have placed a 4x4 over the top.......to act as a strainer. It keeps all the pill coating residue out. I have had good luck with this, no dobhoff or g-tubes plugging. then i always flush the tube with water.

since our unit is so acute, we hardly ever use prilosec down a G-tube. Instead we use Prontix IV. Of course the most expensive way to recieve a proton-pump inhibitor.

As one who gives this daily, sodium bicarb is a new method I haven't heard. But dissolve??? I read that the granules were enteric coated--not disolved in stomach, but in intestines. This was reason not to crush granules. I have 55-60 pts @ noc & the stupid DON wonders why I ***** because all old pts have stomach problems & I have to give 15 of these things @ 6:30--1/2 hr. a.c.---they get it all the same time? NO!! You can't be in 3-4 places @ once. I like protonix---give anytime w/o reguard for meals.

When giving meds via G-tube, you need to read the drug information to know the proper method.

do not crush or let prevacid granules dissolve in a liquid before giving it to the patient. prevacid is timed release. we are beating its purpose if we crush them. we learned it the hard way. we got cited by dept of health services for that when i used to work ECF.

I requested that the order be changed to Prevacid Solutabs. They work just fine.

:yeah:

Try Prevacid Solutabs, that is what we use.

It is available in a liquid form, however it needs to be refrigerated. Could you request that? My peds G-tube pt. uses the liquid form, but my other g-tube pts. are capable of swallowing. I have them swallow the pill in a bit of applesauce.

I swirl the water in the 60mL syringe and slowly add the grains. My tubes don't clog.

i realize this is an old post, but anyone using sodium bicarb to disolve the med for delivery into the stomache is off base. circumventing the proper delivery......i would request either the liquid or change the script.....the apple juice will work, with care.

re:Huganurse

Why would you not use veggie juice to administer Prevacid via g tube?

because the directions tell you to use apple juice.
