Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi there everyone!

I am still trying to figure out what kind of nurse I want to be. I am pretty sure I want to be an OR Rn. I have thought about getting some info on plastic surgery nursing. If any one has any info I would really appreciate it.

Hate to break the news to you, but in the OR you will be oriented the first forever then you will be selected to a team , the best thing I suggest to do if you wish to work in the Or is get into a peri-operative class asap. It will get you in the door of an OR , OR nursing is like , when there is an opening someone from the deptartment died, because OR nurses seldom leave .

If you want to specialize in plastics then I suggest you become buddies with a plastics dr now and express alot on your interest and see what pull they may have getting you into the OR, with the nursing shortage now that may actually work. As far as teams in the OR , there are only a few actuall status quo nurses that do only one speciality, Neuro, and Hearts. other than that you will need alot of general experience as well, which is wonderful to have if you want to work plastics. Most plastics are done in an out patient surgical center, because it is cheaper and the dr makes out better money wise than in a hospital, larger surgeries such as tram flaps and tucks and lifts, and reconstructs are done in a hospital OR because they require a longer post op stay. IF this is something you wish to get into I can see what info I can pull for you , I will contact the peri-op instructor at the hospital Im at and get the info she has , it may help.

I have many specialities that I work in , because I travel, but I do enjoy a plastics case now and then, its a great scrub case, but Im true to Open hearts and transplants and harvests.

Hidi74, I was considering plastic surgery too. Not sure what to do...am getting my LPN so I'm probably pretty limited.

I used to know someone in my home town, used to be my sister's girl guide leader-- moved down to texas and got a job as an RN in a Sex Reassignment clinic. There's all sorts of fun out there!
