I've been a pt many times. Trust me, the last thing on my mind while I've got 2 iv's going and specialists coming in waking me up is sex.

If you're well enough to have sex you don't belong in a hospital. It's a hospital, a place of business. It's not a motel you can get by the hour. People need to treat the hospital and the nurses who care for them with respect.

that is simply maslow's opinion. i respect that other people feel sex is a need, although i don't see the rationale behind it. how long can someone go with out breathing, food, and water before they die? how long can someone go without sex before they die? we may need it for procreation, but the actual act in and of its self is not something needed to survive.
i agree. sex is not a core need in order to live.

There are STUPIDER cases that have been won, tho!

I wouker with a quiet Nurse named Lisa, who walked in on a female pt and out from under the covers peeked her B/F. he sheepishly wiped his mouth. Poor Lisa was mortified! Funny part was after that all you had to do was smile and wipe your lips and she would blush.

It really doesn't matter either way, because if a pt is going to have sex conensually even after we have told them not to and why, it is still their basic (ick!) right. But while they're going at it I will be calling the doctor to have them discharged.
It just goes without saying. Some people have no class!

You are so right . . . this is just a class-less thing to do.

Good grief, we aren't dogs in heat. It can wait.

Before I get started here are two things to know:
1)I'm in Canada where all health care is public (that doesn't mean that you won't get a private room, but it does mean that the hospital is public)

    2) I'm currently in the ED so my view might be skewed

We kick boyfriends and girlfriends out of patient's beds all the time. If you are in emerg, you shouldn't be sleeping with anybody. If you feel you should be, you shouldn't be in emerg.
The hospital is PUBLIC. I knock on your door as a curtesy to you and I don't wait for an answer. If you are arresting it might sound the same as great sex, I'm not going to take that risk.
I don't bring my girlfriend to your chocolate shop / hardware store / law office for sex, don't have sex where I work.

Just my thoughts. MY PLACE OF WORK....MY RULES. If you can't keep it in your pants for a couple of days then maybe you need to be seeing more than one type of doctor.
The one exception is parent / child. In that case I encourage parents to climb in if they feel like it or the child asks. Other than that, sorry, no go. I see enough uncomfortable things on a daily basis, I don't need more because you're horny.
Wow...That was a rant, but I do feel better... thanks.

One time I had a male patient and a female patient that met at the hospital. They would say they were going out to smoke but they were going out to his car and having sex (according to her and the security guard that caught them). Both of them had the same doctor and it was very uncomfortable to have to call him at 2am and tell him what his patients were up to. The really bad thing was that the male patient was HIV positive and we could not tell the female patient.

the older gent with the wife in nursing home, yup, abuse....had a case years ago,(working agency) the kids insisted that parents be in same room even though they knew that dad was abusive (not in this way, hitting) mom had had a stroke didnt want him there, the kids wishes were honored!!!!
they tried to keep an eye on them, and did catch him at least once....luckily the bastard died first...
I don't understand why the wife's wishes were not honored. You said she didn't want him there. That should have been the end of it. How barbaric for someone imprisoned within her own body to be further locked up with an abuser. That's outrageous.

Just a funny that one of my coworkers told me. I work on an ANTEPARTUM unit. The nurse recieved a Nurse call to come to the pts room because she had a sudden gush of fluid when getting up to go to the bathroom. The nurse came in and got the pt to bed and asked where she leaked. There on the floor was a small "puddle of leakage". The nurse got down on all fours to look at it and smell it. She stood up and said it doesnt smell like amniotic fluid, but I know I know that smell! The pt became suddenly quiet and the boyfriend in the room practically crawled under the bed in embarassment! Once she figured out what was going on a lengthy lecture on Pelvic Rest was given. I giggle every time I get to tell that story. The visual of the nurse on all fours smelling it just gets me every time!
