Overheard at the nurse's station - page 4

My office is at the opposite end of the unit, away from the nurse's station. My daily routine is to spend the mornings on the unit, rounding with doctors, helping with care, and talking to patients.... Read More

    aren't you pending licensure?

The mocking of a new nurse hasn't even begun, you're not a nurse yet!

Ok you got me. I will come back in a few weeks once I have ROCKED the NCLEX in 75 questions and my license comes in the mail. Will I be valid then?

I'm a nursing student/CNA. Putting a person on a bedpan is not a time consuming task.

Anyway, the RN was dead wrong in running out and leaving the patient like that. Lying twice to the boss? I'm surprised she wasn't canned on the spot! If for some reason, you are keeping her on, please have her take a remediation class to improve her CNA type skills. She obviously doesn't have a good grasp of what it takes to do this kind of work.

When I get my RN license, I won't blow off the CNAs. You don't burn people off if you can help it when you need to run a tight ship.

This RN has been written up, and even suspended before, by me. Unfortunately, she knows how to play the game. She will change her behaviors until the specified disciplinary period has expired, and then slip back into the same old patterns. Our hospital has recently changed some of it's policies, making it easier to terminate this kind of person. Since this is her third time in disciplinary action in five years, I can terminate her for the next violation, without going through a suspension first. This is just the first step in the process.

    Mindlor,

Not to make anyone upset by any means, however, There is nothing a NA can do, that we as Rn's cannot. Remember, it is certainly ok to delegate, but never come out of a room and ask someone to do something that you are certainly capable of doing. By the time you have walked down the hall and located a Nurse Aide, you could have already completed that simple task, not to mention that the patient is certainly going to be much happier to hear the Nurse say, "I can help you with that". It's all about the attitude that it is done. Another thing, when your NA's see that you are willing to help them, they will gladly return the favor, thus making the floor a much more enjoyable place to work.

I think you have two HUGE problems with this RN. The one you identified plus the fact that she lied to your face about a patient care issue TWICE in one day. Doesn't sound like a nurse I would want to work with.

I feel bad for that CNA. That RN is probably pretty peeved at being written up, and may end up blaming the CNA for her (the RN's) problems...since it's safer for the RN to blame the CNA than the OP or even herself for getting into trouble.

I hope she doesn't take her frustrations out on that CNA.
Something tells me this CNA pretty much has a license to steal on that unit.
