Operating Room Job

Nurses General Nursing

I am an experienced RN. I would like to transition to the OR but when job searching they only want RN's with experience. Does anyone know of Hospitals willing to train? I am in California currently but willing to relocate

Its about getting lucky more than anything

The OR is wildly different from all other specialties, so most of what you know is useless and much of what you need to know you wont

Can take close to a year to bring a non OR experienced nurse into the OR

your best bet is to look and just get lucky and to find a place that cant find people with experience (as you can see why theyd want them, since training someone for near a full year is a ton of resources)

Or if you REALLY want to be in the OR maybe look into a scrub tech program (most OR's will want people who have scrub experience and know how to scrub) although they can be time intensive (i think?)

Or even something like Periop 101 which is some online training module by the AORN to get a new person up to speed in the OR. itll probably cost around~ 400$ and take 100~ hours of your time to complete. But I think both of those things could help you land an OR job if thats really where you wanna be.

Personally if I wasnt in the OR and really wanted to be (which I would) I think a scrub tech program is definitely the best way to get your way into the OR. I just dont know about the cost/time involved in doing one, as I literally just got lucky when i ended up in the OR myself

The OR is awesome, and youll never be able to go back to the bedside once youre there. No question about it
