Do anyone know if there is a tool somewhere on the internet where you can put in a list of symptoms/characteristics and it will give you an accurate diagnoses?

The problem I have with your thread is that I was always trained that nurses do not diagnose - we are not trained for that - yes we recognise signs and symptoms, but diagnosis is the job of a doctor. There may well be software that can assist with diagnosis, I have seen at least one in the dermatology field, but to be honest, it is an aide memoire only to compliment physical examination and history taking and cannot be used well by someone who is not trained to be a doctor.

FYI...Nurses just don't make medical diagnoses. My brother, an auto mechanic makes diagnoses every day about the cars he works on. I also make diagnoses according to Asian medicine when I do Zen Shiatsu.

nurses make nursing diagnoses, which are completely different from medical diagnoses. Just read Nursing Diagnoses by Lynda Juall Carpenito-Moyet.

I'm sorry I don't know anything about an online program for making nursing diagnoses.

I think what you are looking for is like a nursing diagnosis generator program and I haven't heard of anything like that. I have never heard or run across one for MDs either. Have you tried the Elsevier care plan site?

We are currently reading Cappenito in nursing class. I guess the older generation of nurses are not familiar with nursing diagnoses.

Since my test next week will cover Nursing Diagnosis and the whole Nursing Process, I am very familiar with Carpenito.

In answer to your question, yes there is a website out there like that. I think I read about it here. I will go look for it.

It started back in the days of double-knit polyester glory. When nurses I once thought were old got their education.. the 1970's. Here's a website to tell this lovely tale....http://www.nanda.org/html/history1.html

I just don't think nursing dx is user friendly or lends itself well to today's busy healthcare environment, nor did it in the 1970's or 1980's. It was an effort to define what nursing did..which has come to mean just about anything and everything those in power in our healthcare systems can squeeze out of us. At one time, I think we were looking to have greater autonomy and partnering w/ other disciplines. We did achieve some of that, but not necessarily through nursing dx (IMHO) but because what we do is so technologically advanced and essential to the functioning of the healthcare system.
