Does anyone else have to use these wretched machines at their facility? We use the NxStage for CVVH/CVVHD for hemodynamically unstable patients.

Ever have the urge to throw one out the window? Once you get one red alarm, you get others, and it becomes a never-ending cascade of badness, like DIC.

Yeah, we use them all the time. I defenitely feel your pain. I think the constant attention the machines require add to the frustration.

But, now at our hospital we are piloting a new method of pt fluid removal that has decreased the number and severity of alarms, at least on the nurses view (we have no data yet to show). We dont have to calc hourly I/O's and adjust every hour for pt removal. The nephrologists now calc the removal rate based on the prior 24 hr I/O and we go from there. Perhaps the decreased number of adjustments puts less strain on the filter.
