it used to be that you could go to work and do your shift and feel like you accomoplished something, nowadays it is nearly impossibleto complete all your tasks let alone spend any quality time with the patient.

Why yes, it's the fault of Obamacare. After all, nursing was GREAT before PPACA was passed. :wacky:

Says much more about nursing home than nurses.

Not all nurses in nursing homes are miserable. It depends on the individual facility. I've worked at a few bad ones that made me nearly leave nursing. I've also worked for a few good ones....nonprofit companies. I feel heard, cared a out and treated with respect. I enjoy my job most of the time.

I said it because it's going to make it even worse. If you think it's going to help the field, you're sadly mistaken. I've never see massive layoffs for nurses in my area until local hospitals started dropping hundreds of jobs in anticipation for the implementation of this crappy law Jan 1st.

After working in so many areas in nursing for twenty years plus, I would have to say the majority do "Suck " . Heck, I came out during the proverbial -Nursing Shortage . On that note , I find that the main reason for "Sucking " is healthcare has become like everything else- Business. Matter of fact, even after going back to school and multi certs. has equaled no more ,no less of a voice . Still being pushed around by ,"The Man".

Ok, would I want to do something else ? Heck, No ! Let me tell you ! This gig pays too well. Nowhere , would I find a gig that pays like this one, but I wish I could make (at least ) eye contact with my pts. But . Such is assembly line medicine. My adaptation to my Magnet Status hospital/Department is to just go with the flow. Realizing it is about money on all parties and the pt comes last ,but with a friendly customer care smile/survey. Still once in awhile , I/we nurses see a ray of hope that is immediately crushed with so much contempt , so thick from administration -one could pour it on waffles.

So, in the end, don't stumble into our radiology department without one's order ,etc. - you will get scanned . Call for an order majority of the MDs the response is ," Yeah, yeah, yeah " and after that dial tone. Not bad watching Netflix between pts.

We need to leave nursing to the folks who are ready to accept it as it is: hard work, poor working conditions, long hours, and underappreciation from management. The nurses who can't take the heat are dragging us all down...

I disagree. Ones who lie down and accept the status quo contribute to the stmosphere that make it possible for employers to perpetuate the crappy working conditions and the substandard pay. While I agree that the profession is a calling to some extent because of the "caring" element, I also believe that nurses need to quit being martyrs and not be afraid to say and think, "it IS about the money".

I love the "accept it as it is" this is what all CEO's of these sick factory hospitals want to hear. yes accept it as it is and let us suck you bones out...

honestly this is one of the most discouraging things about working in healthcare - that so few people seem to WANT to stand up for their rights! If they can keep us fragmented and fighting each other, they will always have us right where they want us because yes as individuals we can be easily replaced. if we stand TOGETHER, we have the power to hold the policymakers and CEOs accountable and make changes for the better.

Yes I entered the nursing field because I love to care for people and help them through crisis, but at the same time it is allows for us to make a nice income. Do you think all doctors if any chose their field just because they wanted to be doctors? I believe it is okay to love your profession but also enjoy the money that is being made as well. I do agree that some people should not go into nursing such as those who have no heart for people or who have no compassion.

I appreciate the nurses who paved the way for the field, but I DO NOT agree that we have to keep working in lousy conditions. That's not what it is SUPPOSE to be like, people made it that way. I hate that attitude that people have we should embrace change and change for the better.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. If we accept substandard treatment, then that's always going to be the normal. "We had to put up with much worse," is also not an excuse. If the older generation had to put up with worse, they should have put their foot down and taken initiative to make changes.

It's nursing's own fault. There's WAAAAAY too many nurses and we permit schools to keep cranking them out. BSN mandatory - no discussion (everybody gets a time limit to get it done). Just like physical therapists made doctorate the entrance degree. When nurses become a precious commodity, working conditions will get better, but not until then. It's just way too easy for hospitals to tolerate that first year 26% turnover rate. Someone is standing in line to be abused by the bad employers. When staffing is adequate, your whole attitude changes.

The staffing grids are inadequate. Hospitals refuse to call a staffing agency instead make the nurse manager take a cart. They should be punished. Only got worse under Obamacare. All direct care being done by Lpn's, and RN's are forced to be managers and everything else. Too much work. Takes months to find a job. Millions of foreign nurses. They get beat up.by patients and don't complain, setting up.all nurses. Many healthcare settings with ZERO white staff. Where is the government? Cheap nursing home owners refusing to turn on the ac during a heat wave.
