it used to be that you could go to work and do your shift and feel like you accomoplished something, nowadays it is nearly impossibleto complete all your tasks let alone spend any quality time with the patient.

I edited my other posts because they sounded ridiculous..

Anyways- op, I hope it gets better for you!

You need to find a job that works for you. I feel that many of the problems in nursing today are the lack of competent management. I have had nursing jobs that I loved and hated. I've got two good ones right now, good luck.

AMEN...100 times over!!!!

i don't know where your from but I don't make $50k a year to start much less after 17 years.

Most RN jobs start at 24 -25 bucks an hour minimum. At 40 hours a week, that comes out to 50 k a year.

I'm a CNA in a nursing home, and all the nurses there just seem miserable. It sorta discourages me as a nursing student. I'm just trying to keep my head up and look at the positives!!

Guess what? Many were miserable in the 1980's so there's something to be said for consistency. *LOL*

Think the main problem is there aren't as many if any outlets these days. Even if one did find another gig it may not pay as well as a steady nursing job (assuming one has such a thing). Back in the 1980's nurses were leaving to work for insurance companies, start or run homecare/nurse's services, and so forth. Anything to get away from the bedside.

My third patient...
Wait wait wait.....you only had three patients? Is this the norm where you work?

At one time , I use to feel like you " Nursing Sucks " even joined the Marines -not as a nurse lol .However, working as a nurse from the early 90's was able to move around. Move around alot -I did ! Furthermore , I used the shortage to my advantage and finally found a great hospital and department to work in. In addition, I have been in my department for 13 years. Never , stop looking for something better ! Plus, I know of some nurses that have gotten into some even more sweet jobs. For example, Hemo-dialysis nurse for a cruise line in the Caymans,or oil company nurse in Alaska .

I only have four years in, but I feel completely burned out. I've lost 35 pounds, running my behind off on a busy med-surg/stroke unit. My boss is an ogre, the senior nurses are all her "spies" who run to her with half-truths, innuendo, and bald faced lies as a way to demonstrate their loyalty. We are constantly understaffed, I've been assaulted by patients and had to go to the ER, FIVE TIMES IN FOUR YEARS, and that doesn't count the numerous punches-kicks-bites I've received.

But last night, a patient's family member stopped me in the hall and said "Thanks, you were just awesome." He had been my patient six months earlier while recovering from spinal fusion and I guess I made a good impression.

This job, I love it and I hate it. It demands every ounce of everything I have within me. And I know that someday it's going to break me.

I figured somone would notice this. It is not the norm....unless you have a fresh transplant (POD#0-4). Our unit policy is if that a fresh transplant may only be placed in a 3-patient assignment. With how busy these patients can be, even that is sometimes too much.

Fortunately on the day in question in my post. My transplant recipient was doing fine and gave me time to deal with psycho family members of my other two patients.

Says much more about nursing home than nurses.

I have lost every bit of passion for nursing and yes burnout happens very quick. Management is TERRIBLE and I can't believe hospital bureaucracy allows continued deliberate incompetence. I come in contact with lots of pain seekers, people who drain our hard earned money through taxes cuz they will not give two cents about their own health. I don't get appreciated for my work, people view us just as a work ant following doc's orders, so much politics in workplace... There is no other job like nursing. Overworked, underplayed, and totally unappreciated. Have to pay for own insurance, hospital schedules you for Easter, thanksgiving, Christmas, new year, and where will everybody be while we get crap from docs, patients, families, and all else? In their homes enjoying holiday meals. I freaking hate this profession because of unbelievable amount of dung surrounding nursing. The other day almost got assigned 8 patients had the cn did not find a float. If you safe harbor, they will fire you through a loophole of any tiny mistake you make. I don't want to be crowned a king of England, but yes, like every other human being, I want to be recognized, appreciated, compensated and feel good for what I do for the amount of time, tears, stress and money I put into bachelor degree. All we get however is whiny patients and family members. I am finding alternative to nursing.

Nursing is still the most admired profession in public polls. Folks generally see nurses as overworked, underpaid, and selfless in their devotion to patient care. As a 30-year veteran, I have seen nursing make many transitions, mostly for the good. What disturbs me now is the overmarketing of the profession by schools who see nursing programs as a cash cow. I see many men and women entering the profession because they see it as a steady job with good money. Nursing is still a calling.... folks who think they are getting an easy ride to quick success need to stay out of nursing. I'm tired of hearing students say that they have chosen nursing for the job market or money (let's face it- where else can you come out of a 2-yr college program and enter the market making $50K to start?) We need to leave nursing to the folks who are ready to accept it as it is: hard work, poor working conditions, long hours, and underappreciation from management. The nurses who can't take the heat are dragging us all down...

Yeah everyone should stop complaining about horrible conditions and unrealistic expectations so things never get better and people keep burning out after a few years unless they have that magical, elusive "calling" to suffer abuse at the hands of management and corporations. Down with progress.

Welcome to where ObamaCare is taking health care-reduced quality of service and decreasing the pay in such a way that the incentive to work hard is gone.

I learned 2 weeks ago my weekend option position was going away and would just become a part time employee. No more 3 hour stretches of having to pee while you're cathing a pt, short lunches, or missing breaks. I'm going to get what I'm entitled to and if I can't get done what I'm supposed to do, thank Obama.
