Nursing student giving me the creeps.

Not just me, either. Where I work we have a practical nursing class doing their rotation and I was approached by this very large, rough-looking guy with a shaved head. He was loud and crude, and when I would answer his questions he would say things like, "what a bunch of crap!"
He looked like he would be more at home in a biker bar than as a nurse. Now before anyone blows me to smitherines for "profiling" and stereotyping I want to say that I'm not the only one who thinks he is weird. I mentioned to another nurse I would not trust handing this guy the keys to a med cart and she totally agreed. I was surprised at my visceral response to this guy because I do not like to jump to conclusions about people and I know looks can be deceiving.

omg! are you sure you weren't part of my LPN class in07??? I had a guy just like that.. but turned out he had a pretty good heart and a wonderful advocate for the res/patient. But this guys seems a bit more......scarier!I say give him a chance and see how he performs throughout the class and if you see any issues do not hesitate to point them out. A facility is only as strong and caring as it's weakest link!! student or not

In all serious, sometimes those "gut" instincts can be spot on. So, if you feel like he's bad news, keep an eye on him. We had a nursing student passing through, and we all felt she was not good nurse material. She was kicked out of the program shortly after clinics for stealing patient meds. She now in prision for drug charges.

But, on the other hand, while you are being careful with him, also give him enough room to prove you wrong. You never know, he maybe the best nurse around when he's done!

TreehuggerRN:

You and these men. What is going on? He may be a nice guy and he may be roughneck, but I would have overlooked all of that and checked him on his professionalism. Don't shy away of what you are working with, everybody has a purpose, maybe he could have been that one to help lift a heavy patient. But let it go, he is not going to be there forever and you are so funny LOL.

You've never seen a large, rough-looking man with a shaved head before, seriously?

That description fits a few nurses I know. It also fits my next door neighbor, and he's a teacher who prefers jazz music & fine wine to motorcycles and biker bars.

Hee...hee!!!
My bald and tatooed husband is now considering becoming an RN!!
Truly kind hearted, compassionate man...but wondering what others will think?

But yep, certainly some nursing students have given me the creeps in other ways...we even had a centinal event involving a nursing student last year.
