Nursing School in the Caribbean...? !!

  1. 0
Has anyone heard of the Robert Ross International University of Nursing? It is relatively new, and is a state of the art nursing program (2 year) located on the island of Saint Kitts in the Caribbean. I have been waiting to start nursing school, and it seems like I will be starting next fall...as in 2007. I really want to start NOW and am tired of waiting. I am getting a 4.0 and know I am going to thrive in nursing school.

The program works like this. You spend your first year on the island completing 3 semesters of generals and nursing classes, mostly nursing. Your second and last year, you are back in the United States at one of four colleges they partner with to study your last year and do your clinical rotations. The schools in the US are all acredited by the NLNAC, but the portion in the caribbean is not yet, but is participating now in the NLNAC mentoring program.

After finishing the program, you are qualified and prepared to take the NCLEX exam. It seems all great and legit. I have done research and it seems like a great opportunity. They have no waiting list to start their program, so I could start NOW and be done in two years. Any advice??? I dont want to finish the program and have someone tell mee that I waisted time in the Caribbean etc. Check out the schools web site at www. iuon . com (IUON.COM) THanks!!!

basically, i have never heard of an RN program split between two schools, and am trying to figure out what problems this could create, if any....

any advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks again...jeremy

I would find out what the colleges are that you would attend once you were back in the U.S. Contact them and ask them about this process and what the NCLEX passing rates are. If it is all legit that sounds great. What an oppertunity to see the world! Good Luck!

There are some older threads on this site about the school -- you could use the "search" option to find and review them.

The last time I talked with an advisor at the school they were using two schools in Texas for US clinical positions. You would get two degrees, one from IUON and the other from the US school. That would make you a US Nursing school graduate and eligible for the NCLEX.

I talked independently to the schools in the states and they acknowledged the partnership.

IUON was also trying to secure additional clincial spots in various states.

The school seemed legit, but I decided not to go. It was getting too complicated to keep everything straight.

    hey all,
i go to IUON. Its a real school and after you do a year here you do a year in the states. The only affliated schools that are open now are west kentucky technical community college in kentucky and seminole state college in oklahoma. both of these schools are accredited and after completion you will have obtained you A.A. degree and are allowed to sit for the NCLEX. There are no schools open in Texas but there are talks about other schools that should sign on in the next few semesters.

If you do decide to go I would be very careful I have a friend that attended medical school on the same island and he said there is a large gang crime population he was robbed several times traveling from his apartment to school which he explained was just across the street! he ended up leaving school after they broke his hip with a baseball bat in his 3rd week there! If I were you I would really check everything out before you sign on.

If anyone is interested, the pass rate for the NCLEX at Seminole State Univ in Oklahoma is 85.71%. Not too bad of a pass rate, at least above the national average, I believe.

Edit to add: OK, just slightly below the national pass rate of somewhere around 87%.

i guess crime is a problem, but crime is a problem anywhere. you just have to be careful just as in any big city such as new york or los angeles. the good thing about the school is that we have a small number of students and the staff is here to help you with any problem you may have. you can take your pre-reqs before and be here for 2 semesters (8 months) as i am. i have been here for 5 months now and i enjoy being here. the students come from all over the states and we have all became good friends. the best thing about this program is that you can start right away and finish in less than 2 years. i know in the states it take years to get in a nursing program and here you can just come and get the schooling out of the way. its a big sacrifice coming here this far and leaving home but its far worth it in the end.
