Nursing Reentry-How'd you do it?

by PJNRN

I'm planning to reenter the nursing field after (gasp!) 14 years. I've read a lot and stayed up on some stuff, but I know I have a lot to catch up on. I'd love to hear any suggestions, sage words of advice, tips, etc., from any of you brave souls out there who rejoined the workforce after a lengthy absence! Thanks so much!

I can't believe your message didn't get a reply until now.

I have to say, Go For It! I am in much the same position. I have been out of Nursing for approximately 7 years. I just got my Nursing license reinstated and I'm hoping to get a job in Nursing in the next few months. I've been a stay-at-home mom for most of those 7 years i've been off so i've stayed busy. I'm sure you have as well. I know it's possible to re-enter Nursing after so many years but we have to be persistent and show our potential employers that we are motivated. Continuing education is a must so that's where I'm starting. There's a lot of information here on the internet about different Nursing organizations and their respective conferences and other education offerings.

Keep me posted on your progress. Perhaps we can encourage each other along the way back into Nursing.

Best of Luck to you!!

Thumbs up reentry
I've rentered nursing 5 years after career change to computers. Stayed active as an RN for 15 then returned to IT again for 5 years. I'm in the process of doing another reentry. This time combining computers and nursing. Hope that gave you some encouragement. It's fun and challenging!

Default I'm almost there!
Thanks for your kind words! I have almost completed a 6-week refresher course, so I am almost ready to return. The course was great--a lot of clinical time. A lot has changed, but it was comforting to note that a lot hasn't changed! I was able to see that I do remember a lot, and the clinical time helped me see the areas I needed to brush up on. Onward and upward!

Default Check with the local schools
of nursing in your area..Many of them offer refresher courses and the State Board of Nursing in the state where you settle may have a list of possible courses...Good Luck and welcome....
