The Philippines overproduces nurses massively. At present there are nearly 200,000 unemployed nurses in country. That sort of labor oversupply creates the environment where nurses and patients get screwed over and exploited. The students too (many disreputable schools mean the average license exam pass rate is less than 50%).

... and this USA is just a few years behind a similar situation...

Very well said summitAP, thanks for the comment. We can help by increasing awareness regarding this situation. Nursing is a noble profession, and we should maintain its nobility..

Thanks for the insight. Unfortunately, the same is happening here. It's time to tell young people that unless their heart is truly in it and they can afford to go without work, they'd be better off in a different career. And this will not be popular, but as the US continues to take in other countries' professionally trained people that will work for less and do a whole lot more, don't expect the jobs market to improve. Just ask the guys in tech careers being outsourced to H1B Visa crowd from India. Nurses are being outsourced as well.

Wow that is really interesting. There are the same type of incidents happening all over the world and unfortunately it all boils down to each individuals self worth and ethics. The sad thing is that many individuals have to support their families and will be forced to endure such stressful and unsafe working environments just to make ends meat. I'm sure they are aware that if they quit another hungry soul is waiting to take their place. It's sad to hear these things, hope someday someone will put their foot down and start a revolution!

Note to self: Don't get sick in the Phillipines.

This article does not surprise me at all. It is a terrible situation over there, but what are we supposed to do about it? We need to work on our own situation in our own countries. We have made the situation worse by hiring overseas nurses from the Phillipines, can't you see? Our hospital is 75% overseas Phillipino nurses. So by bringing nurses over from other countries, we have lost jobs for our own citizens. America is very good at outsourcing and getting kicked in the butt in the end. America has tried to be the "saving of the world" and now we need saving. Who is going to bail us out? Certainly not India, Philipines, or any other country.

It is well said and its only the philippines could actually straighten or change the system.united states has got nothing to do with it...they have to start on people in higher position.....

Nurses are being exploited because we let ourselves to be exploited. Nurses who fall in line for volunteer / training slots should stop. It is not worth it nor do we deserve it.

You might have a point there. Never truly thought of it till now. I wonder how much Red Cross non volunteers earn? Is there a CEO of Red Cross?

Finding flaws in others and washing our own hands regarding this matter will just create a divide. It does not matter what nationality or race we came from, what matters is that we are all nurses, we carry one flag.. and that is the flag of Nursing.. It has been soiled by present practices, and we are all responsible for cleaning it up.

I will start by identifying the system that confines nursing. Before a nurse is hired in a hospital, he needs a "backer", someone inside the hospital, perhaps a relative or a friend who is influential enough to back him up on being hired.

-> so true, even though that individual is not competent enough to perform the nursing duties; as they believed that person will learn later on. but when will it be, a week, a months time, or years?

labor oversupply

-> so true, there is over supply of nurses in the Philippines but there are a lot of Filipino who can't access healthcare and still believed in superstition. the problem here is that there is labor oversupply of nurses, lacking health care funds, and POOR utilization of the healthcare resources.... :smackingf
