Nursing Magazine?

Well, many would disagree and say it's not "scholarly" enough, but I love RN. Snappy, interesting and accurate enough to be of help without boring you to tears. Nursing 2009 is good too, for the same reasons.

I get AORN, but that's a member perk (for being a member of AORN) and the focus is on Peri-operative nurses and the Journal of Forensic Nursing (for IAFN members). They're both informative but not of much interest to anyone not in those fields. I've seen a few Nursing Made Incredibly Easy mags lying around at various times in our break room and they looked interesting and had quite a bit of useful info - if I was going back to the floor, I'd probably subscribe to it, mainly because it was very clear and focused (though as another poster called her magazine of choice, not very scholarly. But if you're looking for useful hands-on information and illustrations, you can do scholarly in addition to it if you feel the need.

Kind of on but kind of off-topic - does anybody remember the Journal of Nursing Jocularity? It was a great comedic nursing journal that used to come out quarterly - it was all humor, but stopped publishing when most of the members of the editorial board were killed in a plane crash. Must have been 10 years or so back now. They put out funny tapes like 'Who's got the keys?" about the eternal search for the narcotic keys (there was even a dance for it), funky songs to remember ACLS algorythms, etc... stuff like that. I really miss that magazine, I looked forward to it and was sad when it ceased publication.

I just read the journals that go with my professional memberships: AORN, AACN, ENA, ASPMN so that would be the following journals...AORN, AACN Bold Voices and Critical Care Nurse, Journal of Emergency Nursing, Pain Management. They give me a broad spectrum, and I practice in each of those areas as a float nurse. I used to read the Nursing series each year and many decades ago RN. Just SOOOOOOOOOO much out there could spend all my free time reading nursing and nothing else.

I wish I could join the professional memberships, but they are so expensive. The ANA was around $600.00. I don't know why they have to be so expensive!!

American Society for Pain Management Nursing is $96 AND $10 for local chapter. AORN is about $100 for national and local chapter. Emergency Nurses Association is $100 for national and local chapter. American Association Critical Care Nurses is $100ish for national and local chapter. MOST have local chapter meetings with continuing education offerings. AORN is 1CEU per meeting, others vary. Today with magnet and clinical ladders everywhere it is an inexpensive way to got much needed CEUs. Some states also require CEUs for licensure renewal. Not to mention the networking and social interaction the organizations afford. Also, some organizations are partnered to give additional discounts. I get a discount on car insurance due to one membership, and some offer conference organizations offer discounts to professional organization members. Not to mention the self motivated professional advancement of certification. Employers view this in the hiring and promotion process in a positive way.
