Nurses who go on breaks during report

So I'm frustrated.... I work with a couple nurses who will go on break during what is supposed to be bedside report. They are usually working late in the hospital for whatever reasons-- working on the schedule, etc.-- and they figure they can give it to me once they get back. However, I still get annoyed. Usually they come up to me about an hour-hour and a half into my shift. By then, I've met all my patients and all the questions I would've had for them I've already figured out. Report to me at that time seems silly and just interrupts what I'm doing.

Granted, I don't usually have very critical patients, but is this something I should talk to my manager about? Or am I overreacting?

That's insane. There is NO reason they should go on break before they report off. This needs to be addressed ASAP before something bad happens. I would talk to them first then move to management if that doesn't work.

I think it's very disrespectful .

I have never heard of such a thing. Who doesn't want to hand over responsibility for their patients as soon as the oncoming nurse is ready?

"....Usually they come up to me about an hour-hour and a half into my shift. By then, I've met all my patients...."

An hour to an hour and a half!!!That is not a break by any definition.

My first stop would be the DON. If there was not an immediate fix...off to HR you should go.

And based on the fact that the former has not occurred already I am going to assume there is more to this story - maybe a favored employee situation?

Totally unacceptable and your direct supervisor needs to address this issue. I would be concerned about assuming patients without report. This may get you into trouble if something happens.

Aren't they then clocking out way late?? I wonder why management has not spoken to them about that aspect of it.

It doesn't even make sense. Wouldn't they want to hand over and go home?! I'd speak to them about it and if they don't change talk to your manager. It might be dangerous to start work when you haven't received report.

Our problem is similar. We have 8 and 12 hour people. I'm a 12 hour day shift person. The 8 hour people come in at 3:00 and they ALWAYS need to take their break at 6:30pm. I leave at 7pm. So they ask me to watch their patients. I always say "as long as you are back before 7 cause im out of here." Then they always come back at like 7:15-7:25. I should have been on the road and nearly home by then. Don't go on break at 6:30, i want out. If you want to go on break at that time then you need to work it out with another 8 hour person who will be there. But instead i need to sit around and wait for you to get done.

Nope, not anymore. Latley i've been coming down to the breakroom and tell them to come back because my shift is done. People don't like it..but i want OUT at 7pm. im exhausted.

I've worked with a couple nurses who feel the need for one more quick smoke break during shift change/report time.

Though to be fair, they always ask if it's okay first and they're always back in time to give report. But it's kind of sad some people are so addicted they can't wait 30 min till they punch out.
