Wouldn't it be nice if we could have a "free day" off without using PTO?

Now THAT'S showing appreciation!

While fantastic, could you imagine the cost for 700 nurses? Yikes.

Years ago when I was a CNA at a LTC facility, nurses used to get really nice gift baskets with spa stuff and a certificate for a free massage. I was envious because back then there was no CNA week or day and I felt unappreciated.

I'm a new grad now working at a hospital but have been an aide there for the past 12 years. Each unit does there own thing for Nurse's Week. The unit I was on as an aide didn't do anything except have a potluck each night. Now that I'm an RN on a different unit, I'm curious to find out if we'll get any recognition.

We won't get any recognition, unless it is to tell us we did something wrong. We have a lot of mandatory classes scheduled that week. I have learned to not expect anything, that way I won't be disappointed.

Nursing seems to be a "profession" for people who feel perennially entitled and underappreciated.

Here's something unpopular: we're not that important. We pass meds, we chart, we watch the patient for the docs, we make very basic interpretations of lab data about which we can usually do very little legally speaking. We form a buffer between patient families and administration, and we clean up bodily fluids, for most nurses, these and a few other functions are about the limit of our "professional" usefulness. Sure, we're the largest single employment group in healthcare, but honestly, we take ourselves far too seriously. At a certain level we comprise a valid profession, but by and large most of us are just skilled labor, wage earners.

I don't need an appreciation week, and judging by how a lot of nurses act, the mistrust a lot of docs and administrators have for us as a group is warranted.

Most places I work in my area are very involved in Nurses Week. Hospital Week gets their own week.

Things I have recieved in the past: 20-30 minute massages: 2000-2005; 2008-present (different orgs, btw), gift cards from stores, local restaurants, nightingale pledges, daily goodies, raffles, free USABLE items-coffee mugs, blankets, lunch bags, messenger bags...the best item I received was a hand-blown glass mug...I've had this mug for over five years and its my favorite-besides my Wonder Woman mug ;)

I am appreciative of working at places that do celebrate nurses, However, I like being a nurse. I really don't need the gifts. I appreciate the work we do...NURSES ROCK!!!

Flame me if you must, but this is MY OPINION and I'm sticking to it!!!

This year we are told to pay it forward toward a charity of our choice. They did send us the form telling us it is tax deductible. Oh and to say it is from XYZ hospital. :spit:

It really hurts my heart to read this.

Your employer should do a better job of showing you that you are valuable.

I honestly thought my hospital made up "hospital week" but i just googled it and it's a real thing!!! wow. our hospital has a banner by the entrance for CRNA week, doctor's day, lab tech day etc. but there was NO BANNER for nurse's week!! just some "hospital week" events. nothing to honor the nurses. sad.
