Nurses' Week Celebration

  1. I would like some ideas about what you would appreciate as recognition for Nurses' Week or any other occasion worthy of recognition.

I think "recognition" of nurses YEAR ROUND with retention initiatives and geniune expression of appreciation, as well as decent treatment similar to that accorded physicians, is the ONLY way to satisfy me that anyone really cares. JMO.....

That said, Nurse's Week is at least a start. But no cheesy gift will take the place of the above.

I have to agree, we should be recognised all year round not just 1 week a year. A lot of nurses work their a$$ off all the time and get nothing for it, except sometimes disrespect from Dr's or other people.

Since the place i work at has bent over backwards to cater to patients (well that's fine), and physicians, they spent so much time with those two groups, they've slacked on the nursing aspect. It would be nice if WE received REMOTELY the same catering (i.e. respect) that the docs do. We ARE human beings first, after all.

I remember one year, the facility I have worked at for years, gave us all carnations on the day shift,(the flowers were distributed about 11am) then we were asked to leave them for the next shift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How about that! They really love and respect their nurses! Debbie

I agree with your observations, but let's all acknowledge the transgressions of the past and move on... If your boss were to ask you what you would appreciate as recognition for all the hard work that you do, what would be worthy?? (Bear in mind the reality of a department budget.) It is very difficult to make things right if history keeps repeating itself. If WE don't know what we want, how can they??

The reality is, this is what I WANT. It's sad that no one seems to want to budget for such things....and .... I was sincere, really; I did not mean to be facetious or sarcastic. And no, I have not changed my mind. . You asked what we would want; we answered you. I am not sure what else we are supposed to say? One week a year just is not enough in the face of the issues we deal with as nurses, in my opinion. Anyhow, sorry this was not what you were looking for....maybe someone else can help out....

    Have a good weekend!
