I'm thankful every day that I've worked in facilities that served the poor and downtrodden of society. Cattiness was almost non existent as we often said one slip on the bananna peel and we could wind up in our patients shoes...to busy to worry about anyone but our patients.

Worked 4 years in for profit $$$$ valued agency and couldn't believe how staff acted---had to bring in HR from corporate due to pettiness of some staff. 6 months after I left, office closed.

You are doing what I would try and do. When it is a entire group behaving badly it is usually something that happened over time...as new people came to work on the unit they were either sucked in or run off. Hopefully as when more new nurses come to work in the department they will follow your lead and eventually the back biting will no longer be standard of behavior.

You are right, you aren't going to save the world with this but hopefully you can save your sanity.

Ugh... the last place I worked at as an aide was HORRIBLE! I sincerely believe that this catty behavior is a female thing, as I have NEVER had a problem with any of my male co-workers- they have always come to me with a concern.

That being said, I now work on a med/surg floor at a different hospital and the staff is fantastic! I think it is because our floor is so huge, you don't work with the same people very often and no one has time to muster up any gossip. It's beautiful!

    JaxnRN,
As a future new grad, as long as no one tapes their name to My chair, I promise to get along.

Seriously, its not just nursing, It's everwhere!! Keep doing what you are doing and sooner or later people will get the message that you are not willing to listen.
