Nurse reality show

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I often visit the "All Nurses" website and I think the general public would never believe what we face as nurses. Often at work I say I wish there was a camera crew because some of what we do would make an awesome, eye opening reality show. It could have lots of drama as well as comedy. I sit here today with my bones aching from my 16 hour shift yesterday. I lost track of how many times in those 16 hours I pulled up my 300 lb confused, trying to get oob the bed with NGT patient, with just me and 1 other person, but my left lower abd is telling me I pulled her up quite a few times. I lost track of how many times my totally withit 78 year old patient put on her call light or screamed out help but I remember by 10 pm I was telling I am sorry but I have had enough, she then called me a "nasty b****" and believe me I used every therapeutic tool available to me. Trying to meet her needs before she even thought of one, nothing worked. I told the physician she was extremely anxious but instead of giving her anything for anxiety he told me her "bottom was sore" and I should turn her more often....If I had turned her anymore often I would have been the first human automatic patient turner. Then again, if we should have a reality show I don't think anyone would go into nursing........:banghead:

Honestly, I love my patients, I truely do, but I now wish I hadnt gone into nursiing for the very reasons you mentioned, plus the short-staffing and lack of supplies and loss of our merit raise and and and and. lol. I could go on and on listing the reasons I wish I had not gone into nursing.

I so love my work. The help I have given people. How nursing has kept my life productive and met all my needs. How nursing has provided and excellent lifestyle for me all my life. Now that I am semi retired. Life is even better. Amid all the chaos surrounding us in this world. I have my safe haven due in part to nursing.

A reality show, hmmmmmmm........

Let's see....we'd need a catchy title. How about "**** Happens?" Or "Bedpan Stories". Or, "Nurse in White Satin"......(my apologies to the Moody Blues).

We could have an episode about what happens when rednecks and rattlesnakes encounter one another in the wild, complete with the subplot mystery of the mysterious disappearance of the tupperware in which the snake was transported to the ER!

Or an episode about the relative idiocy of removing a VP shunt with a pair of Stanley pliars.......

Or, it could be more reality based. Think "Cops".

"You have the right to remain silent, sir.....and you will soon have the ability, as soon as I load you with Haldol!"

Or, they could just follow one of us around with camera for 12 hours as we demonstrate the triumph of modern medicine over natural selection.

Perhaps they'd even let us vote our least favorite (or compliant) patient off the unit........

Ah, the possibilities abound.......

:chuckle!!! My Pepsi is coming out off my nose!!

I've always thought Dirty Jobs should do an episode on nursing. L&D would be especially appropriate. Of course the audience would miss a lot unless they invent"smell"ivison.

I continually think of creating a reality type show on nursing. I think it could be all things wrapped up in one -- hilarious, touching, shocking, funny, sad, crazy, all at the same time -- I think it could stop some from going into nursing, but could also attract some as well. i think it would educate the public a bit on how AWFUL they are at times, and what a good patient also looks like (usually a person who has some inner class). I think it would be hysterical --

I am a lover of reality shows. I think that if there was a real nursing realtiy show it would motivate the decision makers to decrease the patient to nurse ratio. The 'patient' could be their loved ones competing for nurses. And the winner would get a nurse that only had about 4-5 patients. I know I am dreaming but isn't that what realily shows are for.

a nurse reality show would be an eye opener. it should be called code brown. that pretty much sums up the weekend i had. i love my job and i love working night shift. the things we do to make it through the night. a comedy, drama, documentary, thriller ...all in one.

I think we REALLY NEED a few shows that help the public understand what nursing is.

Shows like House, ER and Scrubs TOTALLY misrepresent nurses and what they do. On Grey's Anatomy and other shows, its the Doctors, doctors, glamorous doctors that are holding patients hands and giving nose-to-nose care. Nurses are for handing you things and bringing pillows.

Of course, a traditional reality show would be out of the questions (HIPPA!) but maybe ordinary people could try to change a poopy adult while doing dosing math, taking and order and listening to the aide say she will be back after her cigarette.

Of course, the market would be wide open to have a great nursing soap/drama, kind of like "private practice". The nurses could start all in school together, then go into separate nursing fields but stay friends. It would be a nice public service for the network, and maybe more people would come to the field.

Also we COULD make some headway with educating people about ratios, nursing homes, etc.
