No Pay for Mandatory Training

I work per diem at a nursing home. They started requiring us to complete computer based training courses -- on our on time. Those without computers at home have to come in on their own time to complete the courses. If you don't do the courses they will not schedule you for work. Called the Michigan wage and hour number and a guy said employers don't have to pay employees for state mandated training programs. Anyone else have this situation?

I wouldn't be working there, that's for sure!

were these courses mandated by the state?

I never heard of not paying people for their time --------- take that back. We pay employee's time for attending CPR, ACLS etc but only if they use our facility education. Otherwise, they go on their own. Also, we are owned by a major corp. that requires us to pay for all MANDATORY education. So I don't know if that requirement is required by dept of labor or not. HMMMMMMMM

It's my understanding that if the company makes the training mandatory they must pay for your time however if it is state required CE to maintain licensed status than you have the obligation to assume the cost to stay current. It's been my experience with facilities I've worked for that they provide opportunities for CE and pay for any mandatory corp. education.

If your state requires it then your options are: comply or find new employment. Remember it will be a requirement there also sooner or later.

Your employer has a reasonable expectation that you should already know how to administer insulin, that knowledge is what they are paying you for. If they are having to train you on this skill you should already have, you should consider yourself lucky they aren't charging you tuition, I certainly wouldn't demand they pay for it.

Did I miss somethng? I don't think the OP said anything about administering insulin. CBT's at my facility are usually quarterly policy and procedure CBT's and we are paid to do them. As a registry RN I get paid an educational rate rather than my regular hourly rate. Have you checked out your facilities policy and procdures regarding CBT's?

That post got mixed with another similar I think.

To the OP- if the state mandates it, why should the employer pay?

I just started at a new LTC job. I was required to complete 15 hours of computer training without pay. I was told that I would not get a work schedule until after those classes were completed. I think they said that these computer classes were required by the state.

I would definetly wonder about this one.

I would not be working for a company like that. If they are skimping there, I am guessing there are a lot of other questionable practices. For me it comes down to ethics, and a lack thereof on the employers part.
