All the NICU positions that I read about are available to new grads (internships) or to the experienced NICU nurses. If I don't ge an internship in May, I can work on a Med Surg floor where I work as a Tech now. But can I get back into the NICU after that? I will not be considered a new grad anymore to qualify for an intership.

Obviously I can't speak to the specifics of the programs you're looking at, but once you've got good med-surg experience, you can go ANYWHERE. Once you have learned to handle varied ailments and post ops and complicated assessments, you can do ANYTHING!

If anything, you'll be that much more desirable with med-surg experience :)

You can do it, but it is a whole new world in NICU. Hop over to the NICU board...there are many threads about this.

Actually, we find that sometimes people from med-surg have a bit of a hard time adapting to how we work, and the neonate isn't just a small adult! But most people do fine!
