New to the Surgical ICU - Searching for Free Education

I am starting a new job in the Surgical/Trauma ICU and I am so excited! :) I have a background in Ortho nursing and telemetry but this will be a big change and I have no exposure to ICU interventions.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good websites or videos to watch so I can supplement my learning at home about ICU topics and "need-to-knows." FREE education would be preferred.

It is essential to understand the importance of insensible fluid loss during open laparatomy, 4-6ml/kg/hr and open thoracotomy, 2-4 ml/kg/hr. It is also important to recognize the sequestration of fluid in the tissues due to handling. Always know the the intraop totals and estimated blood loss.

Hypotension and oliguria are common. Hourly documentation of urine output is essential. 0.5 ml/kg/hr is acceptable in some facilities. You definitely want to see 30cc/hr in an adult and an MAP greater than 65.

Lactated Ringers is acceptable for fluid resucitation but it can cause hyponatremia and alkalosis.

AACN has a ton of free information if you are a member, which I highly recommend. There are all kinds of shiny new articles to read every month in the magazines, and of course, they offer lots of free CEs. Being a part of a professional organization is always a good idea IMO.
