NELRP 2011 awardees

So, I decided to start the thread as Strider suggested. Great idea ;) for us awardees to start talking. I have read that the way we get further taxed is that this now becomes a part of our reported taxable income when we file taxes, so thats how we are taxed twice unfortunately.

Hey all! Long time no chat! Question- Does anyone know if the whole NELRP thing will help us get some nice taxes back or hurt us? It could go either way right? Because I believe the whole amt is counted as income, but then again they tax the HELL out of it (as we all know since the 60% turns into less than half, lol). Any thoughts or experiences yet?

This program is so amazing. I almost wee myself every time I get a deposit. It doesn't get old huh? :D

Has anyone received tax information? I know I need to report it as incoming, and Im thinking we may even get some of the taxes back......but I havent received that information from HRSA yet. Anyone receive anything in mail or can tell me where to get it?

Thanks

Strider76,

I've spoken with HRSA regarding this. The W2s were sent out in mass on 01/31/12, so they should be arriving soon. The government sure does take it's time! Can't complain though! :)

Hope this helped.

Sorry, I couldn't read the entire thread here, but congrats to everyone that got their awards!! I have a question that I wanted to ask on behalf of my friend...does the NELRP take their Parent's PLUS loan balances into consideration?

Sallyp911, I'm pretty sure Parent Plus loans do not count. :-/

I think I'm planning on having my taxes professionally done... but I couldn't resist doing them myself online to see how it turned out. My federal refund wasn't hurt, but I ended up owing Missouri state taxes... not much, but I imagine it will be a bit more next year when it's a full year. I can't decide if I want my federal return to cover it next year, or if I want to makes some extra payments throughout the year. Next year will also be different situation since I will have to file married, so I'm not sure how that will work either!

Any ideas? What are you guys doing?

well i filed this year on h/r block online. i claimed single with 0 exceptions throughout the year and so did my husband (we are just recently married) we ended up still getting an additional 1400 in federal taxes back even after the nelrp w-2. so maybe you should try to claim less during the year so its not such a noticeable hit than at the end of the year. think of it as your federal tax/state tax savings acct every payday. so, as for being married we didnt see a huge hit it actually helped us :) hope this helps you some....

Thanks for making me feel better about how it's going to go now that we are married! I had been hearing terrible stories.

I did ours on the H&R block website as well. Our federal return was awesome, so no issues there. We also claimed single and 0 all year.

I'm more concerned about state taxes since they don't take those out like they do the federal taxes. We owe some state taxes this year, which is from the extra "income" that isn't taxed at the state level, and I just don't want that to get out of control.

PS. Congrats on the marriage!

Has everyone received their W2 from NELRP? I have not received anything yet, and that is the only thing I'm waiting on to finish doing my taxes! I just started receiving this award in 2011, so I'm new to all this. I tried to call them, but sat on hold for almost an hour before finally leaving a message on the voice mail. I've done that twice & left 2 messages, but haven't heard anything.

i did receive mine last saturday they were sent out in a mass bunch on the 31st. you havent moved or anything? if so they may not have your updated address and they usually wont forward federal documents such as w-2?

Hi Guys, I'm an NELRP Recipient from August 2010. I remember last year I got my tax form for NELRP on time, but I have not yet received it for this year. They legally have to mail them out by January 31st, but as of today I still have not gotten it. I called them last week, was on hold for a while but finally got through, they said I could call back on 2/15 if I still haven't received it. Looks like that's what I'll be doing tomorrow then... As to getting the grant for the third year, I'm not sure how difficult it is to get... I sent an email to NELRP in December asking about it...didn't get me too far... and I see now on the NELRP website that the application for third year will begin in March. Congratulations to all of you! So glad to have discovered the threads on AllNurses for NELRP and have gotten the grant myself! I've now (almost) paid off two of my highest interest loans. So many hurdles to jump through, but so worth it! :)

Hi lucky people! :)

I am currently applying for the 2012 NELRP. I've received the initial email requesting intent and banking information, so of course now I can't stop thinking about how wonderful this will be if I am actually accepted!

I have a question for y'all--how did the tax thing work out? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I Made an extra 1400 but i claim o all year then 4 at the end of the year. they take out like 30% in taxes so it didnt hurt me and most of everyone who commented said they werent hurt either. I would continue to make your normal pmts because your used to not having the money and apply your hrsa pmt to your highest interest loans esp any private ones because they usually have a variable rate vs federal which has fixed rates. i know some people are doing their lowest balance to see a quick return but i am looking that long term i will save more interest and the payments are higher on my high interest loans. it is very easy to do as far as verifying employment and everything else. good luck
